To expand, drop frame numbering accounts for the fact the the video is (in both cases) actually running at 29.97 FPS. Over time, this causes non-drop numbering to drift away from real time. About 2 seconds over the course of an hour, if I remember correctly.

Rule of thumb:
You keep interlace when the display device is interlaced. (TV/video).
For display on progressive devices (computer, film), one creates without interlace, typically adding motion blur to compensate for fast motion.-jeff

The Extreme will display analog component OR analog composite.
You will have SDI-SD in addition, but only one analog flavor output at a time.-jeff

From my experience, if cables are included with a product by an OEM, they are more expensive than buying them separately to suit the engineering needs.

If you are shooting onto tape, that is your backup. That’s why only footage goes onto a RAID 0 system; project files, graphics, etc., go on a RAID 1, 5, or similar redundant system.
If you are not using a camcorder with tape (P2 perhaps), I’d suggest a bunch of FireWire drives to archive to.

Thanks for the info, Luke. I’m using Prem.Pro 2. I am aware of DV50 AVI codecs, but was hoping that there was a QuickTime solution, just for efficiency. Last time around, we used BM 8bit uncompressed QTime as the exchange format; I can do that again. I would use JPEG, except we’re shooting greenscreen. Which keys quite well shooting DV50 progressive, BTW.

update: Just did a test with the 5.7 drivers. The same results, except MJPG AVI works well– quite well. That will be fine for my current projects. So thanks for the update! But I do wonder why BM SD 8bit 422 doesn’t appear in the list of codecs in Combustion, and why the 10-bit files are corrupt.

Does your VHS deck have a built-in time-base corrector? Capture cards need a stable signal, and that requires a TBC. Betacam decks have built-in TBCs. You might be able to route the VHS out through the Betacam deck and capture that way.-jeff

Drop-frame and non-drop timecode both use 29.97 FPS. It is only the numbering of the frames (via timecode) that is different, not the framerate.-jeff
