I’d suggest between 800 and 1200 kilo BITS per second… At the high end, many people will probably have a bit of a delay as it buffers, but not too much.

Not sure if I’m correctly following you, but I can say that a properly multi-threaded application [Mental Ray rendering, e.g.] will use 8 cores simultaneously, under XP-32-Pro. I think core usage these days is determined more by application that by OS. Also, some tasks simply cannot be multi-threaded due to mathematical reasons, which can cause ‘lowered’ performance.

It is to be avoided (chroma floor). But sometimes necessary. An alternative if your talent does not move much is to put them on a raised chroma platform. Then maybe you only need 4’x4′, or 4’x8′ instead of the whole floor.

A few points:
Most fluorescents won’t dim. The ones that will (Kineflo, Lowel, etc.) maintain color temperature. If you are going the DIY approach, don’t bother with dimming. Just add or subtract fixtures to get the light level you want, and be sure to use tubes with a CRI (color rendering index) of 90 or better. Look at the post archives on cinematography.net for some lighting solutions.The one shoot I did with a 2-walls + floor chroma setup used a large (about 1/2 the floor area) diffusion screen below the toplights.
Other suggestions: mask off every bit of green you don’t need with black duvateen or similar, on a shot-by-shot basis. Spill is a killer. Plan on about 50% more time in post for wide shots that include the floor; some rotoscope work is almost unavoidable.

Just a guess: Check that the PSD is in RGB, not CMYK space.

You may have to dive in to phone-mail hell. Keep trying at Adobe, and don’t accept “no” for an answer. They should be perfectly willing to let you pay the difference in price for an upgrade to the bundle. It’s probably a matter of patiently working through the management levels until you find a person authorized to say “yes”.
Remember: “Customer Support” is code for getting the customer off the phone as efficiently as possible.

Keep your footage as usable as possible, and don’t use MPG for archiving. Try PNG compression at “Best” quality. It is lossless, but efficient. If you are really pressed for space, I’d use photo-JPEG QTime, at about 95% quality. But my guess is that drive space is much cheaper than your time is…

Take a look at Adobe’s Video and Audio Primers, and review “interlacing” in the “Adobe DV Compression Primer”. My guess is it will help…
