I don’t see anything truly below zero, except the heavy line on the right; that presumably includes the sync pulse, which had better go to about -20 IRE or your signal is out of whack.So – I think you’re OK there.

I’d just ask (nicely) if there is a reason the client actually needs FCP; sometimes for interoperability they do. I usually say that FCP (or AVID) is great, but I have tools that work better for me and my particular situation. Doing short animation, most of my finishing is actually in Combustion, tho’ I do capture and cut a bit with Premiere.

Also, when shooting an interview in particular, there is usually B-roll of “noddies”. That’s a minute or two shot before or after the interview of the interviewer nodding at the camera, as if they were listening to the interviewee. That way, you can edit the answers of the interviewee, and cover the disjointed video that would otherwise result.

After the white balance, raise the gamma of the problem clip. That should get you pretty close.

As Mike mentioned, most video codecs are compressed to some extent. Even HDCam (still a “broadcast” format) is compressed. MPEG is commonly heavily compressed, as it is usually an “end-stage” codec, for DVD or over-air/cable/satellite delivery. The trick is, as in photo work, to limit the heavy compression ’till the very end. DV (DV25) is moderately compressed, and is a reasonable working format for SD video unless one is doing chromakey or heavy color-correction.

I have a little bit of experience with both. They are both workable solutions, but the wonky engineer side of me would give AJA a slight edge; they seem to have a better concept of what a video signal should be.
I have no basis for this, but it seems like AJA is video engineers that started building computer gear; BMD is computer engineers that started building video gear.
But, to reiterate: they are both good capture/output devices.
