Open your “jaggy” Qtime movie in QT player, go to Show Movie Properties, highlight the Video Track, and check under Visual Settings. Chances are that “High Quality” is not on (checked). QTimeDV defaults to a low quality display, which is stupid, but… there you go.

Rendering on the timeline for preview playback won’t affect the original footage, so yes, render as much as you can stand to. The degradation you’ve heard of is when you render out footage, import the rendered footage, and repeatedly do that. Even in that case, the degradation would be minimal if you rendered uncompressed, as long as there weren’t too many generations.

For a third opinion: download “GSpot” (freeware), a handy “what kind of video file is this” utility, and see what it says about frame rate.

Possible things: your RAM doesn’t properly match; you have dual-channel and didn’t install in pairs; you have 3-channel and didn’t install in triples. More details, please! (motherboard, RAM type(s), OS, processor, etc.)

Well, full disclosure, my _primary_ backup is tape (DDS). Most of my HD archive is rendered output or captured footage. I’d argue that any digital media is iffy after 10 years; maybe after 5: Will you still have the device to read it?

I currently use a SATA bare-drive dock; mine is from Wiebetech. Bare drives are pretty cheap; just use at least two separate ones (archive + backup) for anything important.

You might also look into “TMPGEnc”, about US$100; I believe a demo is available. I’m not sure how the output quality compares (I just recently started using it), but it seems good.

OK, then it is definitely weird. And beyond my engineering skills. Possible instability in your video capture/output board? (I remember one of my SD boards never had very stable phase)

A couple things to check:
Can you play any of the clips outside of Premiere? (like in MediaPlayer).
Have you checked your hard drives recently for fragmentation, errors, etc.?-jeff
