my timeline is playing back very choppy and I’m assuming it’s because of the effects I’ve applied. Is it okay to render the footage a few times before the final export? I’ve heard that rendering too many times degrades the image. Thanks for the help.

Rendering on the timeline for preview playback won’t affect the original footage, so yes, render as much as you can stand to. The degradation you’ve heard of is when you render out footage, import the rendered footage, and repeatedly do that. Even in that case, the degradation would be minimal if you rendered uncompressed, as long as there weren’t too many generations.
