Premiere Won’t Play Anything in the Timeline
Posted by Jordan Montreuil on January 7, 2010 at 5:43 amI am capturing NTSC DV via Firewire and my project and sequence settings are set to match. Premiere just straight up won’t play anything at all. I hit play and it will play maybe 5 frames and stop and go back to the start point. Usually it doesn’t play anything at all. Not in the timeline or the source monitor.
I can load up the files in Quicktime or WMP just fine and they play okay. Premiere won’t even play Bars and Tone.
Can anyone help me? I am completely lost here and I don’t know what to do.

January 7, 2010 at 1:41 pmHi Jordan,
After years of editing with Premiere, I had that happen recently and it turned out that the “loop” button was enabled under the Program Monitor window, but the loop point was like one frame, so it appeared to not play when I hit spacebar. If that’s not the issue, I don’t know then

January 7, 2010 at 5:42 pmYeah, that’s not it. I thought that too but the amount of frames it tries to play is inconsistent and random.

January 7, 2010 at 7:22 pmA couple things to check:
Can you play any of the clips outside of Premiere? (like in MediaPlayer).
Have you checked your hard drives recently for fragmentation, errors, etc.?-jeff

Have you checked your hard drives recently for fragmentation, errors, etc.?Yes. They play okay outside of Premiere. And its a brand new computer that has barely been used.
–Does the timeline play without connected camera?Nope. Not even color mattes or bars and tone.

January 9, 2010 at 11:03 pmI have the same issue as well. Timeline won’t play or play just bits of it and stops on my imac. checked with my macbook pro. everything works fine… I don’t understand. Checked if SL was updated and it is. Uninstalled, reinstalled, reboot, everything. But timeline just does not play on my imac.
Any solutions?
Thanks

January 13, 2010 at 11:39 amhey there, I’m running CS4 on a new Quad-Core 2 x 2.93GHz Mac (OSX 10.6.2) with 12GB of RAM and I’m having the same annoying problem! Clips won’t play in the timeline nor in the viewer-window, I can scrub through the clip though. Even with premiere captured dv-footage won’t play!
Now, I’m not logged in as an admin and I discovered that under my admin-account this problem does not occur but I don’t want do all the editing as an admin… So I’m guessing that this problem could be related to some owner-/ right-issues (when I created the second non-admin user, I somehow had to manually set all HD’s owner-rights for that account, otherwise I couldn’t even save anything on the Harddrives)!
I had that problem before and got rid of it by resetting premiere to it’s default settings (I think, can’t really remember how..) Does anybody know how to reset premiere on a mac?!
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated 😉
thanks. Reto -

February 22, 2010 at 10:13 pmTo solve this problem, I open an audio file, so it shows in the “source monitor”. Scrub the audio with the timeline indicator. Then try the play button again. It’s worked for me every time this happens to me.
