Ah, my bet is on the QTime “quality” bug: DV is not set to play at best quality by default in QT Player.
Open your rendered .mov in QT Player,
Go to Show Movie Properties->
select the Video Track ->
select Visual Settings tab.Look at the lower right. Check the “High Quality” box.
Then ‘save’ to preserve the setting.It’s been stupid like this for about 10 years…

Maybe it IS sync? Did you check the AJA control panel for capture, to see what the board sync is set to? Double-check frame rates, too.
I like to confirm by making sure the same settings show up in Machina.The other thing I would consider is checking for a bad cable or connector– it happens.

Was there an error message generated at the time of the crash?
Even if you did not get a window before Premiere shut down, you can probably go to Administrative Tools->Event Viewer (at least under XP) and see messages relating to the crash. That might help narrow down the source of the problem. You don’t need QuickTime Pro if you are encoding within Premiere/Media Encoder, but for the price it’s good to have for other reasons.

Have you tried differing bitrates? (I might have missed that in your posts). Also, in CS3, there are 2 different FLV compressions: On2 and Sorenson. On2 has always worked better for me. I typically use a bitrate of 800 – 1600 Kbps, depending on the image size.
One question would be: why are you using FLV video at all if most of the content is slides? Would it be possible to use FLV audio-only with cue points to trigger still-image slides?

First off: check with the venue and see if they will project letterboxed. If so, you shouldn’t need to do anything.
Otherwise:

Yes. NSTC 4:3 DV uses a 0.9 P.A.R. You have a choice of: cropping the edges and scaling up the center 4:3 area (in which case you will lose resolution), or putting your 16:9 in a 4:3 letterboxed format, in which case you will not lose resolution or image, you’ll just have black borders top and bottom. FYI, Premiere is not so good at scaling; I’d use AfterEffects or hardware conversion if you have those options.

Yes- a video-DVD is compressed, miniDV is compressed, you will lose data in the conversion. Bad idea. Research a way to give them an uncompressed file (QTime or AVI) to do the conversion with. Probably by using a portable (USB) hard drive. Or, check in to renting a miniDV recorder, and master from your own editing setup.
Oh– and if you are using PAL video, the pixel aspects are different than NTSC.

I have to say it’s rather odd to hear of a screening room that only does 4:3, and will not accept video-DVD these days.

To perhaps lead us even further afield — I for one didn’t know that! I thought HD was able to use full-gamut RGB. Time for a refresher look at some SMPTE docs, I guess!

Ah, software “scopes”. You are partly right, but– only luminance should be limited to 100 IRE. Chrominance can modulate to 110 IRE and still be NTSC legal, so some RBG components can go above 235.

7.5 setup is somewhat tricky: it only applies to analog output. I think the switch is in the Premiere ‘scope for those of us used to looking at a signal with setup applied (analog NTSC). You should be using the full 0-255 range for most video/graphics; only certain types of hardware require the 16-235 limit.
In addition to Leader Instruments, Tektronix has some good documents on video standards, too. As would SMPTE.Hope it helps. HD is different, of course.

I don’t think you’re screwed; in fact it’s great they will master for you. But you’ll have to speak with the “tech lady” again. To my knowledge, ProRes export is not available on Windows (boo!). Mac-based facilities can forget that not everything is a Mac-based facility ;>). Ask her if they will accept a different codec: Animation and PNG QuickTime codecs are both lossless compression, and usable on any system. They will be large files, so plan on shipping a USB hard drive.
You will want to provide 1080×1920, upper-field (even) dominance. One note: the PNG codec has an option for “interlaced”. This is NOT video fields, it’s for Web display, so leave it un-checked.
