Those are all really good points! And you’re right, I hate turning on the TV to see a commercial for Billy Bob’s Funeral Service and Magic Shop where its just a bunch of pan shots of the store front and people chatting away followed up by a group shot of everyone waving to the camera. I would always watch them wondering who in the world produced this pile of cow dung, is this the extent of the business’s creativity, and did they actually pay money for this? Sometimes, retarded monkeys with crayons can produce a better commercial and I do feel embarrassed for some of these small businesses who opted to go with less quality.

The idea of a demo real of the competition is a cool approach when you then compare it to what the client can get with my company instead. And really, I take ownership of the work for every project I work on so it shows that I care what message they want to convey. Thanks for the tips and the boost of confidence in this matter!

    August 27, 2009 at 12:46 pm in reply to: Win7 +Custom Codec

    Hi Alex,

I think one thing that Roland is looking at when he is suggesting another CODEC is the fact that your older and more preferred CODEC is not going to be compatible with newer technology that’s out there. And that would include Win7. On the up side of that, Microsoft representatives have released statements that Windows 7 will not restrict 3rd party CODECS in their final version. If that means that the final version has no problems with your VBLE. 2 CODEC then great but I couldn’t tell you as I have yet to upgrade to Win7. I can tell you that, however, I’ve been looking around for support for the VBLE. 2 CODEC and the help sites that I’ve found are even looking for help on this codec, so that is not a good sign.

My suggestion follows Rolands suggestion as I think you might find a newer CODEC out there that will have the same/similar and maybe even better results for what your looking to do. The developers for this codec may have abandoned it a long while ago and moved on to bigger and better things. Heck, those same developers may have also been responsible for a newer CODEC out there that puts many CODECS to shame.

I would say experiment with a few of the newer ones and see if any of them will do what you need it to do. By the way, what exactly is this little trick you’re talking about? If you are willing to share with us, maybe we can come up with an alternate solution to this trick using newer CODECs. Remember, there’s more than one way to skin a cat!

    Thanks guys!

Haha, I sent the jet to pick you up next yesterday and should be there any minute! Actually the function is called the Kristine Nagy-Johnson Awards hosted by the Can-Prevent Child Abuse Organization here in Northern Nevada(for those who haven’t seen the video).

I only had 3 1/2 days before the cutoff date for the competition so I wasn’t sure where I was going to get the footage of kids on such short notice…ahh, what was a guy to do?

yet again, irony striked and I got an e-mail from Crowd Control at allbetsareoff.com saying there is a 1/2 off sale due to a StarTrek week or something like that, so I bout some credits and took a look to see if there where any kids I could find. Royalty Free Keyed images of child actors pretending to be scarred and cute just happened to be on the list of available clips I could buy. Who Knew?!

I have to say that site really is a great tool to have and I have found a use for this site a couple times already. So Kudos to Aharon Rabinowitz and his team for putting it together!

Well, the good (and ironic) news is that I just got a call from one of the organization’s head people. She apologized for the long wait and invited me and a guest to attend a charity dinner. The fun thing is that she informed me I was one of the winners and will be receiving an award for my video at this dinner! Yay! Just before I actually started stirring up trouble with the press. Phew…! Regardless, it’s been a learning experience and I appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. Thanks to all!

    Good Point Steve,

I’ll take a look at the fine print and go from there for that situation. Thanks!

    Thanks David,

Sounds like I need to play a little hard ball in order to defend my work! Well, it’s worth it! Is it possible that there are pitfalls that I should watch out for or be ready for because it was a video contest submission?

August 6, 2009 at 1:29 pm in reply to: client not paying – need advice!

This really has become a group effort!

    DeAnna,

Again, a full agreement is made with everyone here plus with what you are shooting for. As a creative artist myself, I have been in this situation too. I’ve lost a lot when I first started, and have found that my “written production agreement” (I avoid the word “contract” because it can put a scary thought in some peoples eyes as a paying customer) is often updated to cover my butt when a client finds a loophole in it. Starting now, I would say type up an agreement that you can use BEFORE you look for that next client. Read it over and over, then make adjustments. Put a revision date at the bottom too so you know that if you make changes, you are always using your most current agreement form.

With that said, the rights to your work can be preserved if you can prove to the court that you have the original work. (Not necessarily the most current work because if that was the case, then I could ask to borrow what you have so far, spruce it up even more, and claim to be the owner of all the rights….which isn’t how things work) If you have anything with original dates or documentation that she doesn’t have, then you have a better chance. With that in mind, if you can produce anything that shows you have the original rights to the work you have done, you could be a sport and offer her the chance to pay in full in order to receive a written license agreement from you that grants her the right to use your work commercially.

Now I do have to say, that these tactics may not be the best route to go and as mentioned by others may have some side effects on how you look in the business world. But with how determined you seem to be without the tool of a written agreement in your arsenal, the only way I see you having a fighting chance is to either be patient, wait it out, get other clients and income in the meantime….or be down and dirty, and fight like a lawyer would.

Finally, I agree with the timecode stamping that Greg Ball mentioned. I actually add a watermark that pops up from time to time with my website or “unfinished work” in the middle as well as digimarking my work too. I hope all of the information you’ve gotten in one way or another helps you out. I wish you the best of luck with this battle whichever route you decide to pursue.

August 2, 2009 at 5:24 pm in reply to: No Playback on Premiere Pro!

Do you have your playback setting set to a device at all?

If you click on the pull down menu located at the top right hand corner of the comp window, then at the bottom of the menu, select playback settings.

Make sure that under realtime playback, you have “none” selected for external device. This will really effect what happens if you have your camcorder docked while running Premiere.

See if that helps you out at all?

July 28, 2009 at 10:22 pm in reply to: Help with shot but don’t know what it’s called.

If it’s what I’m thinking, Carl Larson did an AE tutorial on how to do it. The tutorial is on analyzing motion.

Here’s the link to the tutorial”

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/larsen_carl/analyzing_motion.php

he uses the flight of a bird and as it takes off it leaves behind a still image of that current frame. Before you know it, you have a trail of images left behind like the motorcycle picture. Watch it and see if that helps you out.

Have you tried playing around with CC Flo Motion? If you play around with the position and amount of both Knots you can make a pretty cool liquid pouring effect with a layer. Just make sure you turn off “tile edges” otherwise it will create a different effect.
