Hi, I’m having trouble with my playback on Premiere Pro. All of a sudden it wont’ play back. No response when hitting the space bar or the normal play button in the playback window, no matter how many times I reboot, re open or re-save..

I did some searching online and discovered that setting my scratch disks could help, but that doesn’t seem to do anything. Now all that’s happening is Premiere keeps shutting down and I get the “serious error” message. I’m using .avi files, and I’m using Windows XP. This has happened before with different projects and it’s driving me crazy. Am I not doing the scratch disk setting properly? Any help is much appreciated.

I would suspect video and sound card drivers. Updating is free and easy.

Do you have your playback setting set to a device at all?

If you click on the pull down menu located at the top right hand corner of the comp window, then at the bottom of the menu, select playback settings.

Make sure that under realtime playback, you have “none” selected for external device. This will really effect what happens if you have your camcorder docked while running Premiere.

See if that helps you out at all?

Thanks, I tried that and it played once, then as soon as I hit the space bar to pause and start again, it froze again. Someone else suggested changing the video playback settings, I did that and the same thing happened. It’s almost as if the space bar has more to do with it than anything else. It’s odd because this only happens after I’ve edited for a while. I was able to work on this project for a couple of days just fine and then all of a sudden it just stops wanting to play back. Could that be an issue with the clips I have? I’m using only .avi and I have a lot of room on the hard drive that has all the video clips on it, so not sure if space is a problem.. but who knows.
