    I posted 2 clips. The first one is the animated emitter with no force object applied. The second clip is the animated emitter with a force object that has been tweaked to the best of my ability. Each clip is about 250KB.

    The clips are a WIP, so nice finishes like masking are yet to be done in AE.

    Extract the audio from the source DVD with a program like DVD Audio Extractor and convert it to a .wav file for import into Premiere. Those DVD cameras encode the audio as .ac3 and Premiere Pro will not import .ac3 audio, even if it is part of an mpeg program stream.

    Hi Stu,

    The DVD spec states very clearly what is expected of a DVD disc when it is inserted into a DVD player. Burned DVDs introduce variations that can fall outside of the DVD spec. They do this at a much higher rate than stamped (replicated) discs. Physical variations (does the data surface have the proper reflectivity?), logical variations (is all the information about the disc arranged in the proper order and in the proper place on the disc?) and application variations (are there any bursts of data that exceed the limit for DVD?) are the result of manufacturing issues with blank media, hardware and firmware issues with the DVD burners and authoring/encoding issues with the software that was used to author the disc. Not to mention that writable discs come in at least 4 different flavors: DVD +/- R and DVD +/- RW.

    You will have fewer variations from high-quality blank media, fewer variations from name-brand burners that are updated with the latest firmware, and fewer variations from professional-level authoring packages (although system and other software conflicts can ruin the performance of even high-priced authoring software).

    Add to that the fact that some DVD players are better than others. Pioneer can charge $1000 for its Elite DVD player, while Magnavox can charge $30 for its cheapest DVD player. What makes the Pioneer worth so much more than the Magnavox? More features. Better workmanship inside. Better error-correction circuitry. Better lasers. Better drive motors. And so on. The Elite will most likely play anything you throw at it, including DVD-Audio discs. The Magnavox might play the Memorex disc that you recorded with the DVD burner that you bought at last week’s swap meet and that you authored with Joe Bob’s free DVD authoring program that you downloaded from spyinyoursoft.com, but then again, it might not.

    I know that’s not a one-sentence answer, but the simple fact is that there are too many variables in “homemade” discs to ensure full compatibility with all DVD players. Many of the variables that I mentioned are removed when you have your discs replicated at a masering facility.

    Mark made some very good points. Follow his advice.

    Additionally, you must consider that there will never be 100% compatibility between burned discs and DVD players. The best you can hope for is about 80% – 90%.

    1. What brand of blank media? Don’t use cheap brands like Memorex or Ritek. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or TDK. And even TDK sometimes turns up with a bad batch.

    2. What burn speed? I recommend never burning at more than half the blank media’s rated speed.

    3. How full is the disc? Some hardware DVD players will choke on very full burned discs. Bad media exacerbates the situation.

    Did you try to add copy protection or region coding? If so, then don’t do that. CP and Regions only work on replicated discs for which you create a master in Encore. They won’t work (can’t work, actually) on burned discs.

    With interlaced source material, my opinion is that this is bad advice.

    AFAIK, all DVD players decode the mpeg video on the disc as interlaced. If the DVD player has progressive outputs, then a de-interlacing chip (Faroudja, et. al.) inside of the player de-interlaces the video to that it can be sent to the progressive outputs.

    Let’s talk NTSC. All non-HDTVs cannot use a progressive signal. The raster in SD sets cannot scan fast enough to paint all 525 lines every 30th of a second. They must be fed an interlaced signal.

    Let’s talk HDTV. All HDTVs have a de-interlacing chip built in. The chip de-interlaces an interlaced input signal. Progressive scan inputs on the HDTV bypass the set’s de-interlacing chip, allowing the unmodified progressive signal from the DVD player (or the HDTV tuner) to be displayed. So which is better, the de-interlacing chip in the DVD player, or the de-interlacing chip in the HDTV set? Obviously, the answer to that will vary *a lot*.

    My point is that you gain nothing (and may *lose* quality) by de-interlacing an interlaced source that is destined for DVD.
