  • After many other tests with the Magewell dongle
captured inside Vegas Pro 13 I conclude the captured .AVI
files are not reliable.. Sometimes there is no video, only audio,
sometimes I get video+audio but both out of sync..
Sorry to have been enthousiasm too fast from a small captured files that worked.
I’m still looking for an EASY video capture software that offers
a good choice of file encoding including low compressed .AVI .
That sofware should be able to accept a USB3 HD video stream from my Magewell dongle.
I don’t need any editing possibilities ncluded (already have inside Vegas).

    I tried the following:
    -Debut video capture
    -Camverce
    -Camtasia

  • Hi Blade,
I’m on Easter vacation for the next 3 days..
I’ll do the same procedure I did before with the Magewell
USB dongle Inside Vegas Pro 13 and I’ll get back to you in the next days..
    I won’t forget you.

  • I’ve finally been able to record with my Magewell USB3 dongle through Sony Vegas Pro 13 using Capture ‘DV’ .. I just had to set the capture properties to whatever resolution I needed which was 1080×720. At the end of the capture I always got an error message telling Sony capture crashed and I closed it.
But the recorded file was in the capture directory ready to be put in the Vegas timeline without problem.

  • I had hardtime trying to capture with my Magewell HDMI dongle
using capture utility inside Vegas Pro 13…
    Not quite working.
So I finally found a video mixer (!!) software called VMix
that actually captures very nicely the incoming HDMI to my
dongle and encodes it to an ‘adjustable’ compression to
    AVI, MPEG, WMV or MP4.
These encoded files are easily acccepted on the
    Vegas Pro time line.

  • Steve,
I just found a program called VMix that seems to do exactly
    what I’m looking for..
    – Recognise the Magewell USB3 dongle device,
    – Capture and save to many possible ‘not too compressed’
    encoding formats.
The best capture/encoding I found so far would be the following:
(MediaInfo text dump of a 60sec 1920x1080i 50Mbps bit rate, 48khz PCM audio)

Other encoding options in Vmix are
    AVI(AVI or MKV)

Do you think these above AVI settings are a good compromise
to save my captured files to be afterward edited in Vegas Pro ?
Or could they be more compressed and still keep a good quality
    to edit ?

Comparing both infos can you tell if the MPG2 is too much
compressed to be used for editing in Vegas Pro 13
compared to the standard DV AVI capture format Vegas
    uses when capturing ?

  • And I forgot to mention:
    You stated:
    >Personally, I would use AVI as it’s only lightly compressed. MPEG and MJPEG >are heavily compressed and really a pain to edit.
    You are right on that.
That’s the file type I’d like best.
But since AVI is only a container I still can’t figure
what to put inside as encoding..
On other forums some users say they are using
MPEG-2 or M-JPEG for Vegas compatibility,
other say MP4 is the way to go for import in Vegas.
    Very confusing !!!
But again the container’s inside parameters are
    always unknown.

My video parameters to encode are
    video: 1920x1080i 60fps
    audio: stereo PCM 48khz

  • Ok,
Just watch this video about The Magewell dongle:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OT0GoALSLM

When plugged to a suitable USB3 port
This dongle is shown as a directshow device in the
PC video and audio devices. No drivers required to work.

Now I used VLC to use the dongle incoming video.
    So inside VLC I select:
    – Media/Open a capture device
    – Select both XI100DUSB-HDMI for video
    and XI100DUSB-HDMI(audio device) for audio
    – I then select read (preview) or convert to save the incoming video
    to a file.
The ‘convert’ option brings a wide variety of encoding option
for tha saved file.. That’s there that I get confused..

I don’t know what the best settings should be used
to get the final captured file importable to Vegas Pro..

    Hope this is much understandable.

What are your file format/settings suggestions for Vegas Pro ?

  • Here is a very detailed resume of what I experienced
in my tests using Magewell HDMI to USB3 dongle :

Now I have 2 capture devices connected to my Win 8.1 PC:
    – DV firewire capture device (Canopus ADVC-100, 4:3 format)
    – Magewell HDMI to USB3

    Inside Sony Vegas Pro 13:

I connected the dongle to one of my readily available USB3.0 port, Inside Vegas Pro 13:
To start capturing, in the top menu I selected File/Capture Video

A window shows up and ask for a video capture format:
    DV or (HDV or SDI)

If I select HDV a popup window shows up
and in the small capture screen it is written “Device Not Available”
so I close it. (Nothing else can be done here..)

If I get back to File/Capture Video and I choose DV

The device showing is my Canopus ADVC-100 4:3 DV capture device which has always worked..

    So I discovered this:
Still in the Sony Video Capture 6.0 main window, If I click the top menu “Video”
I can see the XI100DUSB-HDMI device and select it for the video capture.
The video capture properties option shows Color & Compression space:
RGB 24 selected (the other choice is YUY2) Output size 1920 x 1080 Images freq: 60.000

If I click the top menu “Audio” I can see the digital audio interface
(XI100DUSB-HDMI Audio) and select it for audio capture.
The capture audio format shows PCM @ 48,000khz, 16bits stereo.

Now after setting these options I can see the very nice HD image in the capture screen
in real time —> but no sound.
In the 3 center tabs of the capture window (Capture, Advance Capture, Print to tape)
I click on the Capture tab.
Now I click on the “Capture video” button to start recording.
The recording process starts… I wait a few seconds then click stop recording.
A window shows up “Capture ended”
    Details say:
    Number of clip: 1
    Lost images: 0
    Session lenght: 00:00:06:28
    Mean image freq.: 27,55 ips
    Mean data stream: 163,42 Mbyte/sec.

    I click the close button.

Then a CRASH popup window shows up still named “Sony Video Capture”
    with the following message:
“An error happened during the following operation. An exception occured.”
I click ok then a window pops up with the following message:
    “Sony Video Capture stopped functionning.”
So I clicked the Close program button..

    Hmmmmm…
The created file is around 6 seconds in duration and has a file size of 1.156 gigabytes
Neither Sony Vegas Pro 13 nor VLC multimedia player is able to open the generated file..

    But the file properties show:
    Video:
    image size: 1920 x 1080
    data stream: 1576501 Kbits/s
    Total stream: 1578037 Kbits/s
    Images freq: 29 frames/s
    Audio:
    1536 Kbits/s
    2 channels stereo
    Sampling rate: 48khz

But I cannot open this video file with any program..

After a while of tweaking I discovered this:
Still in the Sony Video Capture 6.0 window, If I click the top menu “Video”
I can see the XI100DUSB-HDMI device and select it for the video capture.
The video capture properties option shows Color & Compression space:
    –> If I choose YUY2 <– instead of RGB 24 with Output size 1920 x 1080 and Images freq: 60.000
–> I can play the video file BUT…
–> The image is upside down and there is no sound <–.
even if I clicked the top menu “Audio”, selected digital audio interface (XI100DUSB-HDMI Audio)
    for audio capture.

I tried at least 87 different apps to capture the USB dongle 1920×1080 stream..
So far none of them capture & encode as desired..

Videolan VLC can capture the dongle HDMI input but
when I view the final captured file the image is upside-down !!

So from there could someone suggest me an ‘cleap & easy to use’ program
that would capture in real time from this USB dongle AND encode the incoming stream
to a specific format to be used afterward with BVegas Pro 13 to be edited ??

In fact what is the best video/audio format to encode to,
to be used by Sony Vegas Pro 13 ??

    Thanks.
