Lacie 4big Quadra. Sounds perfect for you.
https://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11113A side note:
I have the network version of this solution and it works really well especially if you want it to be quick, easy to set up, and RAID compliant, sharable media. It has become invaluable for us in scenarios where you are working with multiple editors/grx artists on a SAN and you dont want to close out and refresh your drives just to see a new graphic, project file etc. Matter of fact integrating this into the work flow actually creates a situation where the media you will one day need to archive is being archived at the point that it is being shared. For instance, a graphics artist completes some graphics, they copy the elements to the shared drive, the editor pulls the elements into their RAID … Voila! You have already archived at the point to sharing. -
I mounted the XDCAM HD disc on Mac OS 10.5.6 via the Sony PDW-U1. It mounts to the desktop like any other drive, so copying was just like copying from another hard drive. The copying method proves to be worthless if you plan on using Sony Transfer tool or any other software looking for an actual XDCAM disc to acquire footage. However if you have a NLE that edits MXF natively then this option might be of value to you.
Regarding Carbon Copy Cloner, I simply pointed CCC to the XDCAM HD disc and told it to make a read-only disc image.
Are you able to mount the XDCAM disc to your desktop? Are you using the latest Sony XDCAM Transfer software 2.9?

Just a theory – If you can somehow achieve getting these files back to a MXF wrapper, AVID MC may just be able to see them as native MXF’s. I have only dealt with XDCAM-HD discs, so never having imported EX1/3 footage into AVID MC Im not sure how to point AVID to the files without “Importing” them and subsequently reducing quality through transcoding as Shane mentioned earlier.
I noticed a another thread and a link to software that may help in getting back to MXF assuming AVID will see them natively.
Full disclaimer – I have not tried this software or the workflow you are trying to achieve in going back to a AVID-friendly file… just trying to help.

Shane,
Im curious – you mentioned a quality loss in transcoding, but AVID handles XDCAM natively. So, I guess in this situation the issue is that there is no known tool to revert or rewrap the file back to its native MXF wrapper? Im not getting how Calibrated{Q}’s decode helps here.j

Just raising the red flag an inch higher. My guess is that the benefits you seek in upgrading might just require those intel chips. Its probably a good thing to trust the installer when it says “I cant do it Captain”
Good luck.

While I greatly appreciate and agree with Walter’s position on the Blu-ray issue, there is nothing wrong with expressing the desire and expectation of what a “Pro” app should be. This update has made me continue to question Apple’s long term commitment to their Pro-Apps. To me this update seems to be a pat of fresh frosting on a steadily molding cake.
Final Cut Studio wasn’t even on Apple’s front page as a featured [trumpet fanfare] tada here’s what you’ve been waiting for for 2 years, but instead was treated like a sidelined second thought “… no no no you Pro-Apps stay over here in the corner, yes that’s right Final Cut Studio you and Logic share this space over here we have to sell more iPhones up there on the big billboard.”
FCP Studio is still a functional toolset, and I bet there are many of us who use it as a primary toolset who would be willing to cough up some serious bucks if a tool was offered that would provide support for, to name a few; Greater media management, more true real-time functionality or background rendering , multi-core aware (yeah I know Snow Leopard is coming), native support for things like MXF, XDCAM proxy workflow, robust media management, More customizable user interface………
Remember rumors of Final Cut Pro Extreme?

OK Bovine Friends. Here’s the latest. Problem solved with a re-install of Quicktime. I guess it was something in the export component that flaked out.
So, if you find yourself in this situation where timecode is not present after exporting a self-contained quicktime, then first re-install quicktime. Go to apple.com and download the latest QT, and install. I didnt have to do anything special as far as digging around in boxes for a QT Pro serial number or anything, it was all retained. Along the way I should mention that before reinstalling Quicktime I had reinstalled Final Cut, which I cant say had any effect.
Hope this helps the next poor soul out there trying to find meaning in ‘Pro’ of Final Cut Pro. Wonderfully marketed, mostly functional, most of the time.
Sorry, Im just whining a bit… Apple’s lack of advancement with this suite is so frustrating. $1300.00 Will certainly buy alot of iPhone apps! I wonder how many registered FCP Studio users are out there. There is no perfect editing app out there, but Apple’s got so many people hooked and the bait is long dead.
AVID… I miss you.
The funny thing is I bet there is someone on the AVID board whining just as much as I am.
Live on!
