One trick we used to use was to first transfer the VHS to a Betacam SP or Digibeta tape (if you have such a beast). You loop the video signal through the composite in on the beta deck and then feed it to the reference in…
Then capture it from the beta transfer.. going through the decks TBC seems to get some of the wrinkles out. Of course your tape may simply be too mucked up to do much with…
Good luck!

No, we never solved the problem and since it doesn’t prevent us from getting work done it has drifted to the bottom of the pile as we are too busy trying to deliver shows to solve this little mystery.
It doesn’t seem to actually affect the captures at all. Just muddles the monitoring while capturing.

[Bob Zelin] “Remember, your life is not as important as the TV show that you are working on.”
Gee, I thought it was just me … Glad to hear it’s a general condition. Misery loves company…

Got a bit emotional there…sorry.. EDL’s bring back the memory of so much pain.. If you really need to bring you FCP stuff into an AVID please use the automatic duck software. It works very well. If you don’t want to buy it perhaps someone on this forum would be so kind as to do the conversion for you (for a modest fee?)…

Hey Sacha,
Why don’t you want to online on a Final Cut system? EDL’s are sloppy, imperfect and out of date technology. There are plenty of decent color correction tools on FCP.
EDL? I wouldn’t. Look you can probably make the EDL work if you need to. Is that really what you want to spend your time doing? Kluging EDLs? Yuck. If you insist on finishing on the Avid you should offline on an Avid system.
Holy cow… good luck what ever you do.
Just my 2 cents.

Just a shot in the dark but is the Kona in the recommended slot per the setup instructions?

That was about the same thing that was happening to us.. and the extra RAM cured it. 6 gigs sounds like plenty.. (we only had 2) but I can’t say for sure.
As I say you can use activity monitor to check and see if you are running out of memory during this process.

We cured that by adding more memory…. How much RAM is in your system? We have 8 gigs now and haven’t had that happen since we went to that number. You can open Activity Monitor before trying the export and see if you have much free ram. Final Cut is not very graceful about running out of memory.

Ive never heard of a 2 gig ram limitation. I’d say 2 gigs is the very minimum. It depends (among other things) on how big your projects are. For a one hour show you probably want 4.
Use Activity Monitor (in utilities) to see how much memory is being used while your project is running. If you have very little free memory then you are probably running slowly and crashing from time to time. If you are showing a gig or so free you are probably ok. More memory is not a bad thing.

We are now able to insert accurately.
When you right click on the timecode display on the sequence it gives you some options including HH:MM:SS:FF and 60@30. We found it set to the latter by default but we changed it to the former and suddenly the inserts are accurate. We must set the in by clicking on the “in” button not entering the numeric inpoint on the keypad.
I don’t totally understand why this works but the 60 to 30 conversion definately required the right tweaks to work correctly.
Thanks for your help Jeremy.
