You need new software to really take advantage of the new hardware. FCPX will scream on that machine.

I’m on OSX 10.6.8. When I first installed FCPX, it crashed quite often. Oddly, after a while it stopped crashing… and that didn’t seem to correspond with the FCPX update either. It doesn’t crash at all any more. Sorry, this isn’t very helpful… just my experience.

You will definitely get better performance by letting your system drive do its thing and have all your projects, video, rendering, etc, on separate drive. The best cost/performance ratio you can get will likely be an external drive unit with a Firewire 800 interface. I’m assuming your Macbook Pro has a Firewire 800 port. Upgrading your RAM to 8GB will definitely help you out as well.

In addition to what Simon said, I hope you are not rendering to the Macbook Pro system drive. At the very least you should have an external Firewire 800 drive hooked up.

I don’t have a steadicam of any kind, but I do have a good tripod, a shoulder mount system and a nice jib.
For audio, I use a JuicedLink DT454. It has very clean preamps; I plug my mic into it and then run a line out into the GH2 for recording. I set the GH2 to the lowest audio gain setting. I’m very happy with the results!
