Following up on this situation. I went in today with some extra gear and some extra time. I found that anything with an unbalanced cable is trouble, unless I run it through a mixer first. For whatever reason, that seems to cut out most of the RFI. However, in this situation, I need to get a setup working without a mixer, which means using xlr mics on small desk stands, feeding into the Zoom H6. This will sound way better than the lav mics as long as I can get them to stay within a good pickup boundary.

Both times I was using some inexpensive radio shack lavs. They run on button batteries and terminate with a 1/8″ plug. This last time I also had a nice $250 Rode lav with a little built-in xlr pre-amp that runs on phantom power. I had to remove the Rode and replace it with a Radio Shack lav because the RFI was worse on the Rode.

Yep, I’ve got one and I’ve done that, but my client wants to transition into recording the podcast themselves and I’m trying to simplify the setup as much as possible.

This baby’s got a lot of options. You can stereo link tracks 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 to record 4 inputs to two stereo tracks. When recording to mp3, everything gets mixed down to a single stereo track. Can’t do it with WAV, though. Doesn’t look like mixing down to a single mono track is programmed in, either. That would be ideal for my purposes. One less thing to do in post.

From searching the D5300 manual for the word “power” there is no apparent indication that the D5300 provides “plug-in power” for the microphone input. This is rather to be expected from a DSLR.”
Richard: I think Dane was saying that the lavaliere won’t work with the H2n, but does work with his D5300.

Thanks, Ty. The EdirolR-44 has some built in effects; one being a noise gate. Would that be similar to using one of these auto mixers?

It is rather “old school” in that it uses a CF card (or internal hard drive which must be downloaded via USB). CF is rather an old medium and I would not want to commit to that if there are more convenient options.”

[Richard Crowley] “My choice would be to have them use headset mics. That would keep the mics in optimal position no matter whicn direction they are looking. Especially if they have no previous experience on-mic. Consider something like the Audio-Technica BPHS1.”

[Robin S. Kurz] “Erm… no, actually it IS FCP X’s fault. It unfortunately just plain ignores chapters when outputting to BD. No idea why. It only burns BDs with generic chapters IIRC every minute or five, so custom chapters shouldn’t work in any player. Unless they changed something very recently, which I doubt.”
I just burned a Blu-ray a couple of days ago with FCPX 10.1.4. It was 25 minutes long, with six custom chapter markers. It worked perfectly on the one Blu-ray player I tested it on.
