Perfect! Thanks again Dan. I’m animating on a map that’s vector looking, so I thought it would look cool to kind of blink on like a console graphic or something.

cool! that is nearly perfect Dan, and I actually sort of understand what’s going on for a change. I have no idea, however, how to introduce a random seed into the expression. Can you help me there? I was thinking maybe random frequency, and maybe even random duration, but based on the value parameters you set up there.

  • If you’re trying to use a layer as your background as well as your environment map, duplicate the layer, then set one of them to the environment map. Hit “AA” on the keyboard and click “Apear In Reflections” – set it to Only – and you should see your image as your background and the environment map will only show up on layers that have the reflection parameter turned up.

As far as footage, I don’t know, but if you haven’t tried it, go try it, it won’t hurt 🙂

Could also use the roughen edges effect in AE if that works for you.

Agreed! Really hoping that they make the 3D Ray Trace renderer friendly with stuff that’s NOT extruded or using any of those features. If I only have one layer I want to bend or something with the 3D Ray Trac renderer, EVERYTHING else runs super slow too. Kind of annoying, but with this card, it’s at least doable if I have to do it. I also have the i7-3930K with 32gb of RAM, so not like I’m lacking in other hardware.

Cool! Thanks for sharing. I was looking at the Titan when I went to build my current system and felt it was a bit overpriced, but mostly out of my budget. I went with the GTX 680, which is a pretty decent card for $450.

I read that bit about the AMD card that was just released as well. Pretty impressive card, but it’s too bad NVIDIA is in bed with Adobe already. I wonder how AMD could tap into that Mercury Playback technology, because those cards are a lot cheaper it seems.

  • Post this to the expressions forum, you might get better results there. My guess is to pick whip the position parameter in echo space to the motion path position keyframes. Then add this bit at the end of that expression. +value; you can adjust the position if you still need to with that little extra bit there, except it may need parenthesis or something, can’t quite remember.

Ok, here’s my final verdict on this. Not entirely sure because I have cs5 on a mac and that’s not exactly a fair comparison. I believe you in terms of faster import speeds, but I’m also curious, were you running WinXP? I can’t seem to get the “drag from explorer window” feature running fast at all. If I use the CTRL-I import dialog, it’s very fast, but who does that?

So next test. Close AE if it’s open already, and run normally. Then try importing a file through the import dialog box, shortcut – CTRL-I.

I tried changing Explorer permissions and figuring out a workaround. Maybe there is one, but I have work to do today and I’m at a pass as to how to drag stuff from the Explorer window to AE and get fast import speeds.

Hey try this: run AE as administrator. I can’t seem to drag stuff from the explorer window, but the import dialog is back to fast.

Yeah, that’s weird. I opened up cs5 on my Macbook Pro and it is near instant. I can’t figure it out, so hopefully the faithful Todd Kopriva comes to the rescue on it. I also started this thread on the AE forum at Adobe.com
