Shoot, I tried that, no luck. I even put all of the new AMA clips to the project into one the same bin (only bin open) and it didn’t do anything. I brought some new media in with the “correct” workflow, those clips relinked, although one did it incorrectly. I clicked on and off of the various options to the ‘open bin’ relink way, nothing. Just to make sure I’ve covered my based, I relink the sequence to the regular media and that worked no problem.
I wish there was an easy way to say, “Avid, disregard that other media, link to this stuff here… the AMA stuff. Or, to unlink the original footage and “batch import/link” to AMA files. Makes no sense why you can’t.

Awesome… thanks for the detailed explanation, I’m going to give that a try.
With what I did… I originally brought them into 5.5 (since I have Magic Bullet, and it doesn’t run on 6 yet). On my other computer, I have 6, so I figured I’d try to highlight the reference media, then right click, then “Relink to AMA” but that’s greyed out, only “Link to AMA”, which obviously creates new, unreferenced clips.
I’m definitely going to give your way a shot and let you know. Thanks again, I appreciate the reply.

Thanks for the reply. I’m using Composer 2.7.2 When I used the PCMCIA slot on the old laptop, it was a snap, just bringing them in using “File/Import P2/Clips to Bin” but I was having a problem having Avid read firewire or USB… not knowing why Avid wouldn’t “see” the camera in PC mode while hooked up under firewire.
The great news is that I figured it out, woo hoo!! (Hopefully this isn’t too moronic but I couldn’t find this for the longest time.) The thing is, I never know for sure if it had to be connected via firewire or USB. I learned that a PC will NOT see it as a “P2 card” if it is connected via firewire. It HAS be connected using USB, that’s it. So…
1. Connect the HVX to the PC via USB 2.0.
2. Switch HVX to “Camera” mode.
3. Press the “Menu” button on the camera.
4. Go to option “#9 Other Functions.”
5 Go four down to “PC Mode.” Be default, it is set to “1394 Host,” change that to “USB Device” and you’re in business!!With that said, you have to obviously have the P2 drivers installed on your PC but that’s simple.

I’m not sure of the ‘exacts’ on the new Red series, Scarlet, but I’m definitely jumping ship when they come out in the Spring (allegedly). They’re 3K cameras starting around $3K… it’s just putting together your exact rig that might run you some extra money… but for the price of an HVX, roughly $6K for a legit one, you can get a TON of camera with the Scarlet:

November 19, 2008 at 5:08 am in reply to: P2 Driver Installation-Connecting HVX via USB (Do I Need to…?)Actually, I was just about to repost a similar topic, but for my desktop (trying to import via firewire or USB, because it’s not seeing either in Avid and the only solutions seem to be geared for mounting on a Mac, not PC). Both the PC laptop and desktop cannot “see” the camera when in “PC” mode. On the camera side, just the “Set-Up” appears on the camera screen, everything else is grayed out. It’s SO frustrating.
My big “duh” issue is that I assumed I had a PCMCIA slot on my new laptop, when in fact, it was an Express slot… now I have to get an Express converter (anyone know of one that works for sure?). I’d much rather use firewire or USB, though, because I’m gonna dump this camera when the Scarlet comes out.
The good news is that importing is a breeze on a five year old laptop with the PCMCIA slot. Now, if the new technology worked with this, we’d all be in business 🙂

August 15, 2008 at 8:37 am in reply to: Music Video – Audio Drift (Importing Drop or Non Drop?)Yeah, that’s exactly what I’m seeing… off just a couple frames but obviously enough to be out of sync. What I did was stack all of the performances, ‘add edit’ then slipped them in sync, rolling out the video to cover the little gaps. I did that about nine times and it seems to be okay… but such a pain. I wish I could have just grouped them and edited.
Fortunately I have enough coverage to cover these ‘cut’ areas. I have to figure this out though for future projects, it might be some camera setting that I have to match with Avid so this doesn’t happen.

August 15, 2008 at 6:21 am in reply to: Music Video – Audio Drift (Importing Drop or Non Drop?)It’s the darnest thing… we used the CD from their album, I imported the same track… and everything still drifts.
The project is obviously set up in 720p/23.976 and we shot it 720/24PN. I’m wondering if there’s an issue with the pulldown? The audio is running a little long, the video is coming in a little short.
I’m totally lost. Worse comes to worse, I can just slip every shot to be in sync for a bit but that’s such a monster pain.

August 15, 2008 at 3:17 am in reply to: Music Video – Audio Drift (Importing Drop or Non Drop?)Okay, so I imported it by default, exported it as .wav file, then when I reimported it I got my options. So this should fix it… it’s a workaround but it worked 😉
(So… importing from MP3 or CDA gave me no options, WAV did.)

(Also, I’m just testing true P2 workflow because I could only afford a 4gb card at the time, which was over a thousand. Now it’s obviously better and we can actually use the camera without shooting then downconverting, now keeping it 720p. On my old laptop, I installed from the CD and, like I said, it was working. Now I can’t seem to get it working on my new laptop, which is my problem. I’m trying to find the variable.
This is the first project I’ve gotten that I would use this camera for, since it’s a small budget. The prior budgets have let me use Cinealta or Varicam.)

That’s kinda the thing that makes me leery about what’s really going on. I did download the drivers from that page, from the same link, installed them, they show up in my bottom tray (on the right) and in my Add/Remove programs… just not in the Device Manager. I saw in a PDF that they should be in there.
And like I said, it worked in my old laptop but not on this new one. I’m wondering if there’s some kind of driver I need on the XP Pro side, or something. I dunno.
The bottom line is that I insert the P2 card and nothing happens, where it can be recognized as a P2 card and I have no idea how to get this running.
And I apologize that these might seem like stupid questions but I’ve never tried to work straight from P2 ever so hopefully you can be understanding in that regard.
But here’s another stupid question to add to the pile… when installing the driver software, when the “select camera” screen pops up, what ‘camera mode’ does the camera need to be in to get recognized; camera, ‘VCR’, or firewire. I can’t seem to get that to work either.
I keep hoping to fall in love with P2 but it’s been a nightmare so far. Thanks for any help.
