  • P2 into PC Avid via Firewire (or USB 2.0)

I’ve scoured the various threads and can’t seem to find an answer to this topic… the closest topic/answer I’ve seen was using a Mac, mounting it that way but I’m dealing with a PC but that was how to transfer to HDD.

I’m trying to figure out if it’s possible to import clips into Avid directly from the 1394 connection. If so, the Avid can’t see the P2 card or camera when it’s in the PC mode.

There doesn’t to be a simple answer. I’d love anyone input on this. (Worse comes to worse, I guess I can just do a hard record via the digitize tool but that defeats the purpose of the P2 workflow.) If it’s not possible… is there any kind of PCMCIA to USB cord that works with P2…?

What version of Avid? Avid 2.8 and 3.0 have native MXF support for P2, so there is no capturing, just simple importing. And that can be done via USB.

But what you need to do is follow the typical offloading protocols. Copy the full card, CONTENTS and LAST CLIP to separate folders on a backup HD. Then you can use Avid to import the P2, then either CONSOLIDATE the footage to your media drive, or copy the card dumps to the media drive THEN import. I prefer the former…import then consolidate. SO that you put the files into the AVID MEDIA FILES bin the way Avid likes it.

Thanks for the reply. I’m using Composer 2.7.2 When I used the PCMCIA slot on the old laptop, it was a snap, just bringing them in using “File/Import P2/Clips to Bin” but I was having a problem having Avid read firewire or USB… not knowing why Avid wouldn’t “see” the camera in PC mode while hooked up under firewire.

The great news is that I figured it out, woo hoo!! (Hopefully this isn’t too moronic but I couldn’t find this for the longest time.) The thing is, I never know for sure if it had to be connected via firewire or USB. I learned that a PC will NOT see it as a “P2 card” if it is connected via firewire. It HAS be connected using USB, that’s it. So…

    1. Connect the HVX to the PC via USB 2.0.
    2. Switch HVX to “Camera” mode.
    3. Press the “Menu” button on the camera.
    4. Go to option “#9 Other Functions.”
5 Go four down to “PC Mode.” Be default, it is set to “1394 Host,” change that to “USB Device” and you’re in business!!

With that said, you have to obviously have the P2 drivers installed on your PC but that’s simple.
