Yea…I like Kevin’s idea. You could further add to the complexity of the light structure by shooting black through an angled mirror (clean it)…and use a laser pointer…you could get some very trippy looks.

In my former life on a PC with CS3…I couldn’t work with images larger than 3-4K pixels…I’d get a image buffer error during render.

It doesn’t move the clip…just revises the start of it. – Make sure you are using the roll tool and have it placed OVER the dissolve, not the clip.
*I may be wrong here…because I am very new at FCP, but…*
A dissolve in FCP can be 1 of 3 things…start/centered/ending at cut. You simply change the “placement” of the dissolve by moving the edit point underneath it. It does revise the length of a clip, but so does adding a dissolve. If you put a 20 frame dissolve on a clip and it’s centered, then it extends the use of the media incoming and outgoing by 10 frames…this is with any NLE I’ve ever used.
Does that make sense?

Correct me if I’m wrong…but how I achieve this is to use the roll tool to slip the transition to where I want it. Not as clean as the AVID dissolve dialogue, but if you want a 30 frame to be offset by 5 frames off center, then just slip the cut 5 frames back and now your “centered” transition is where you want it.

It’s a good thing I don’t have clients then! I just started with an in-house video production dept and I have the fortune of having A LOT of give and take. The deadlines aren’t ANYWHERE close to what I experienced in my former life of working with clients.
It’s been a really good situation, because I came from AVID…trying to learn FCP…sort of “on the job” and I don’t have to turn things out super-fast and there’s never anyone over my shoulder…so if I have to take it home to play with it because of lack of knowledge…that’s most always an option
The problem really starts with the fact that I’m editing stuff shot with a cheap HDV cam that I don’t even shoot sometimes, and I have to digitize footage from the camera, it’s just not a clean workflow. I ALWAYS give myself handles when shooting, but other’s don’t.
I appreciate the advice, but hopefully needing to start at the EXACT first frame of a clip won’t be a common occurrence!

Is it because of the dip to color? I’ve done this successfully with dissolves…
I tried to premultiply the alpha differently, but no luck.

I’ll keep my 17″ and be happy with it!
Quick question on the 17″…does anyone make a case that fits it as a rack mount? I’d like to have one on shoots as a preview monitor, but I’d like it to sit in the case it travels in…I envision something that has a removable front and back…and mounts the monitor inside via the rack mount brackets. I know I’ve seen similar cases for audio equipment.
Anyone know of anything like that?

I thought about my last response…and you are kind of right. If you drag the clip from the browser or viewer…it WILL use the in and out points set. However, the playhead is sitting at the first frame. The action I was doing was a “replace” edit…which uses the current placement of the playhead, NOT the in point. That’s why I was trying to move the playhead to the in point on multiple clips that I was doing a TON of graphic replacements.

BTW, I didn’t realize this before I bought it…but the LM-1760 is a 17″ 1366×768 monitor. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the 22″ monitor would produce MUCH better images at 1920×1080?
