Thanks Rolf, this is great info…I think the workgroup is far off, we won’t have a dedicated employee to manage these databases…so I don’t want to bite off more than we can chew (which I’m afraid we already have 🙂

I saw the licensing is discounted 30% on more than one copy. Is that with a one time purchase? Or can u get discount if u buy 5 licenses, then go back and buy 3 more later?

I just helped my dad do something similar…looking for lowest cost solution…I was able to figure out a tweak using available equipment…your gear may not have same functionality, but this worked. (I was using AVID DV, but same would work for FCP)

Using a DCR-TRV22 Sony MiniDV camera, you run the source (VHS or hi8) into that camera…it has a throughput function (your camera may not), doing a real-time convert to DV basically doing what a capture card would be doing.

Then turn off deck control…and do a live capture

I found it! It’s called DVD Patcher…I have the executable file if you want me to send it to you…or you can try to look it up online. I didn’t even try a search. Looks like the version I have is v1.06. The modified date was April of 2004, and I haven’t used it since way back then.

Also I’m guessing it may be able to re-interpret PAR’s of any MPEG…even though its design is for MPEG2 for DVD.

I remember a tiny little executable file (PC) that you could run and change header information, like bit-rate, duration, PAR, etc.

I don’t remember the name, but I used it to fool DVD players with footage that was over the 9Mbps DVD limit…

I’ll take a look tonight at home and see if I still have that application…I used it many many years ago, but I never throw anything good away 🙂

The file was very small and just changed the header of the file (didn’t transcode).

March 20, 2011 at 12:13 am in reply to: Mac’s Disk Utility RAID maker…

I have this type of setup, 3x 1TB internal 7200rpm. All striped as raid 0. My redundancy is a time machine backup to an external lacie big quadra (6 TB) in raid 5.

I originally had apple raid card installed, then setup raid in disk utility. Found out later that raid card wasnt even being used. All research I did lead me to the result that a software raid was just fine.

I was there last year, such a good networking opportunity! (and the free alcohol doesn’t hurt) 🙂

I love putting faces with all the names I see here on the COW!

Looking forward to a great NAB again this year!

I just love the speed…I’m a huge advocate for the CompressHD…not used the Elgato though.

I’ll look for you at NAB! 🙂

  • [Enrico Lappano] “filming in 60p 1280×720”

This gives you more temporal information. Basic NLE software does a pretty good job of interpreting scale…but you it takes really good software (and good source material) to interpret the non-existent information between frames.

You should shoot at 60 frames and scale up…slowing 30p down will just simply play a frame less often…unless you’re using a plug-in like twixtor or something (which I’ve not used).

    That is correct.
