  • Aaaaha.

So, I figured out why that option was grayed out for me. Because I was foolishly adding a layer marker to a pre-comp in “main comp” that didn’t have any markers within it. So, there were no markers to update.

It doesn’t work for all the pre-comps in the master, just the one you’re specifically working with.

But, just as you outline above, once I put the dummy it on the correct pre-comp, that “update markers…” was available in the context menu and works as you described.

    Thanks for taking the time!

  • I *think* you’re describing what I was looking to accomplish, but that is never an option for me. I’ve added a dummy marker both to the parent comp and the child comp and both context menus have that option as grayed out.

Apple doesn’t seem too interested in updating the Mac Pro. I already have three monitors I’m quite happy with, so I’m hesitant to buy a computer with a monitor built in — which significantly hurts the IMac’s chances for me. Still, despite updating my video card and such, my mid 2010 8-core Mac Pro is getting pretty long in the tooth.

I’ve been looking at puget systems.: https://www.pugetsystems.com who actually work with you to build a custom machine based on how you’re looking to use it.

Sure, it’s PC, but everything I’ve found online has given them pretty high marks (I’ve been hemming and hawing about taking the leap for over a year now). I continue to read up on Windows 10 and continue to be torn.

  • Hmmm. I appreciate the response (resurrecting a 2012 string! What fun!) but that option is grayed out for me. In the example here, you can see that I have a pre-comp that’s living in two different parent-comps. I want the marker to show up in the parent comp, even though I’ve added the marker after the comp had already been placed in the parent.

For 04_mainCompPT4_v1, I just dragged a new instance of it from the project pane, aligned it to the previous version of itself in the parent comp timeline, deleted the previous version, and the marker followed the new instance. However, I learned in 00_previewComp that while you can alt-drag the pre-comp into the timeline over itself, it doesn’t update to include the marker.

In short (too late), you have to re-add the child comp from the project pane “from scratch” into the parent for the marker to be visible. It’s not a huge deal, it just means that if you have any expressions or keyframes in the pre-comp you want the markers to show up on, you need to copy paste all to the new instance that includes the markers.

  • I realize this string has been long left for dead, but I’ve just made the same discovery about the markers not showing up in parent comps. Here in AE CC 2015.3. Interesting that this lil’ bug was never circled around for.

Perfect! My goodness. I feel like every After Effects user needs to work together on getting a statue erected in your in your honor. You just saved me a ridiculous amount of time.

    Thank you VERY much.

This string has been an amazing help. So, two things.

First, thank you very much. I’m waaaaay closer now than I was when I started, all thanks to you.

Second, in the digging I’ve done around these here internets, to use an expression with text animators, you’re pretty much getting rid of the range selector. I’m curious to know if there’s a way to have the best of both worlds?

In short, I’m matching the words up with what is being said by a voiceover, so I’d love to be able to get in there and tweak the timing for “per word bounce out” alignment.

Think William Shatner as Captain Kirk delivering a line. Is there a way to easily align the triggers for each word’s bounce out animation to align with when it’s being said?

I seriously have not signed into creative cow for a looooong long time, but I just wanted to say thanks for this template. This here has saved me a lot of time and I appreciate it a great deal.

    Onwards and upwards!

I’m surprised this thread is still earning response. If anything it helps me to feel like, “great. I wasn’t losing my mind after all.”

Since then, I’ve actually pretty much made the full leap to premiere pro – and I haven’t ran into these kinds of issues. I mean, there has been issues, but nothing quite as blatantly “what…the heck is going on?” as this one was.

I could not have worded this post better myself as I’m running into the same exact issue…also working on a documentary. I’m already in premiere (as I’m constantly bringing in new footage) and I’ve been doing the metalogging there. And, sure enough, I haven’t been able to find the way to add…essentially…an end of marker…mark without manually dragging out an endpoint in the edit marker dialogue box and then refining in the timeline. I’ve tried every google search I could think of to try and figure out a shortcut to essentially turn a marker into a marker that I can adjust the duration of.

After reading through this thread, I’ve attempted to incorporate alt, but I still am not finding the “extended markers” that existed in FCP. What’s frustrating is that the basic functionality is here. There’s gotta be a way to crack the code from a shortcut perspective!

I’ll be watching this string closely.
