You may be best sending it to SoundTrack Pro. They have a bunch of analyzing methods that can take out pops and cracks, and may be able to smooth it out some. But the sad truth is that beyond manually redrawing the wave forms, there isn’t really much you can do when audio is clipping, because the levels were too high. There’s a lot of info that just got cut off at the top, because there was nowhere else to go.

My favorite technique for this, as long as you don’t need to be precisely 50% or whatever.
(I’m assuming that it’s on V1, that v1 is connected to V1, and that autoselect is on for V1)
Put your playhead over the clip that you want to retime. Hit x to set the in and out to the clip. Drag the in and out of the clip in the timeline to where you want the new in and out to be. Now, drag the shortened clip to the canvas, and drop it into the “Fit to Fill” overlay. This will put the retimed clip into the timeline, without changing the duration.
If the video is linked to audio that you don’t want to retime, simply Option-Drag the video in and outs, and then option-drag the clip to the canvas “Fit to Fill” overlay.
(Sorry if this is confusing… it’s hard to describe, but this is the fastest and most intuitive way I’ve find.)

If you don’t want to buy something, and would rather spend time making things look decent, export a batch list, then open it up in Excel. It’s not the best, but it will get you what you need.

For Leopard, at least. Can’t vouch for anything else.
It’s a bit hidden, I agree. Took me a couple months to find it as well. It’s under Keyboard Shortcuts in the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane. It’s at the bottom of the pane. You can also try hitting CTRL-F7.——

You can do that with the gradient colorize effect, under Image Control. A lot will depend on the quality of the footage and the gradient you make in the effect. Default will be a black and white gradient. You’ll want something a lot more rainbow-y.
