My favorite technique for this, as long as you don’t need to be precisely 50% or whatever.
(I’m assuming that it’s on V1, that v1 is connected to V1, and that autoselect is on for V1)
Put your playhead over the clip that you want to retime. Hit x to set the in and out to the clip. Drag the in and out of the clip in the timeline to where you want the new in and out to be. Now, drag the shortened clip to the canvas, and drop it into the “Fit to Fill” overlay. This will put the retimed clip into the timeline, without changing the duration.
If the video is linked to audio that you don’t want to retime, simply Option-Drag the video in and outs, and then option-drag the clip to the canvas “Fit to Fill” overlay.
(Sorry if this is confusing… it’s hard to describe, but this is the fastest and most intuitive way I’ve find.)
