i have a finished edit of 100 odd clips. i realize i want to change the speed of the 10th clip. so i copy it take it to the end and command j it and slow it down or speed it up. then i cut and paste it back in its place. If i were to command j and change it while in the original spot in time line it adjusts everything in the time line once speed of clip is adjusted. the question is how can i change the speed of the clip with out adjusting the rest of the time line?

Why don’t you just remove the entire clip from its place in the time line, move it to the end of the timeline, do your speed change, then adjust its length & move it back to its place in the timeline?

Either do it the way you are doing it, or hit F to match back to the clip in the Viewer, adjust the speed, then cut it back into the timeline.

My favorite technique for this, as long as you don’t need to be precisely 50% or whatever.

(I’m assuming that it’s on V1, that v1 is connected to V1, and that autoselect is on for V1)

Put your playhead over the clip that you want to retime. Hit x to set the in and out to the clip. Drag the in and out of the clip in the timeline to where you want the new in and out to be. Now, drag the shortened clip to the canvas, and drop it into the “Fit to Fill” overlay. This will put the retimed clip into the timeline, without changing the duration.

If the video is linked to audio that you don’t want to retime, simply Option-Drag the video in and outs, and then option-drag the clip to the canvas “Fit to Fill” overlay.

(Sorry if this is confusing… it’s hard to describe, but this is the fastest and most intuitive way I’ve find.)

Let me know if you have any questions.
