  • That is a cool plugin my biggest thing is if I cut the 444 prores in final cut does it loose the log-c color space when sent to the color timer. I remember seeing something saying that final cut pro brings the bit depth down. I just want to make sure I am not loosing any original information

any monitor with a dvi port and supports 1080 resolution is fine it is what looks good to you, some people like one thing and others like others it is just your personal preference . what feels good on your eyes and if you want one for color correction you willl have to tack on another 0 at the end

what i have found out is that ingesting bites slightly differently sometimes so yeah first connect all the clips that don’t have issues then start doing your clips that do have issues.. you never want to see thats screen

it will do much more damage then you think with your edit

but that is just from personal experience

Yeah I have had the error before on many shows the path i have had taken is to reconnect them one by one to eliminate the bad ones that are saying that there is not enough to re-edit in. then stick of of those in a bin and basically recapture them by doing a capture now and changing your pre-roll and post roll to the minimum which is 1 sec so you basically capture the clip slightly longer then it is and figure out the timecodes and set in and out point and put them in the edit. It stinks but i have had that issue with many formats, dv, dvcprohd, hdcam, etc

thats your work around it stinks but thats how i have been doing it on many shows and it always works

March 11, 2013 at 8:28 pm in reply to: ProRes Auto Gamma On or Off?

Just looking at the clips in fcp with the scopes up and my broadcast monitor on I can’t tell any difference just a note

Heres what it says about gamma correction directly from apple

    Apple ProRes Tips

This section lists some practical tips for working with Apple ProRes codecs.
    Gamma Correction

Apple ProRes codecs have a native gamma of 2.2. The Gamma Correction setting in the advanced compression settings pane allows you to disable the automatic 1.8 to 2.2 gamma adjustment that can occur if RGB material at 2.2 gamma is misinterpreted as 1.8. In some cases this gamma adjustment is not desirable (for example, if the source image is RGB 2.2, or if the encoded Apple ProRes file is meant to be used in another RGB-based application).

Automatic: Select the Automatic setting to have the Apple ProRes codec convert RGB 1.8 gamma source media files to 2.2 gamma.
None: Select the None setting to disable the adjustment of 1.8 gamma to 2.2 gamma.

So is the better question to ask is the pdw-700 camera recording at 1080p23.98 50mb @ XDCAM HD 422 , is it already a 2.2 gamma or does it record in a 1.8 gamma?

  • yeah i just did some tests now our old shows have a basic title scroll from fcp in their 1080i 29.97 (59.94) timeline and the scroll is super smooth. when i added the text into the 23.98 progressive sequence and did the pulldown the text looks ok but not nearly as smooth. when i frame step in it appears its doing a basic pulldown and interlacing every 4th frame or so does this mean every text element will have to be brought into the 29.97 sequence after the video has been done i hate doing double exports?

  • great thanks Mark yeah that does sound right to me. I just hate failing QC. Here is a question you could probably answer. When it comes to the chyrons, text, credits, etc. Do you build all of those in your 23.98 progressive sequence or do you wait and spit out a textless version of your 29.97 locked sequence then add the text elements? I ask this because we have failed qc on text elements having the wrong field by accident.
