January 23, 2008 at 6:38 pm in reply to: advancing through multiple tracks with different aspect ratiosWow! You really know your stuff. Your explanation went a little over my head at this point but I plan to keep that info and read more into it and learn. I’m a little green with the DVD authoring but the information you provided will really help me I’m sure. Thank you. And I agree, using one aspect ratio and one track is a much easier. Unfortunately, when you don’t have control over what’s being sent your way, you have to figure out a work around.

January 18, 2008 at 11:53 pm in reply to: advancing through multiple tracks with different aspect ratiosI just figured it out. I’ve been working on it all day and I finally found the work around to shift forward and back between tracks. Basically, you need to use 15 frame slugs and set chapter markers on those slugs to end jump to the next track and its respective marker. I’m not very good at explaining things but needless to say, it can be done by using slugs, markers and end jumping as an intermediate, to trick the dvd into skipping tracks forwards and backwards. Craziness. Anyway, thanks again for your help.

January 18, 2008 at 5:36 pm in reply to: advancing through multiple tracks with different aspect ratiosyeah, it’s messed up. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I placed markers at the end of each track to use as cue points to skip forward and back, I’ve tried stories, markers at the top and tail of each track but nothing seems to fool the system. It just won’t skip tracks basically. Frustrating. I’ll have to letterbox all material and put it on one track. So for future reference then, I guess it’s not a good idea to mix aspect ratio’s in DVD SP or any DVD authoring software.
Thanks for you help, I appreciate it.

January 18, 2008 at 4:08 pm in reply to: advancing through multiple tracks with different aspect ratiosI should clarify this question: What I want the viewer to be able to do is skip forward and backward from one track to the next using the advance, next or chapter skip button on their remotes.
thanks,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Shane. So you’ve see or heard of this before and the only solution is to upgrade. That sucks.
I actually have access to a machine that has FCP 5.1.4, I think it’s .4, anyway, if I re-import the footage through my system, then transfer the mov’s to my editors capture scratch, delete the old files and reconnect, would that solve the issue?

Fantastic! Thanks again for your help.

Thank you Barry, I’ll give that a try. The HVX is a really great tool but it’s funny how much misinformation is out there and circulating even on set with working DP’s. Is there any source of good clear and concise information, like an instructional mov or something that would paint a clear picture of the Camera and it’s various functions? I’m sure if this is correct but I heard that you may have put together a video about the camera, is this true? If so where can I find it because it would be a great resource.
Thanks again for your help.

Shane, thanks you so much for getting back so quickly. I apologize for my slow response. What you’ve said really confirms what I’ve been reading and it’s unfortunate for the director and editor that the DP on this project didn’t look more into the camera and how it handles things. I have one more question for you though. The camera manual talks about the HVX being able to do VFR not only in the PN modes but also in 24p, 30p and 60p within 720 of course. When I tried this, at 30p and adjusted my frame rate to 60fps for slow mo effect, with the P2 card it seemed to ignore the frame rate change and therefore the footage was recorded simply as 30p, or 29.97 in FCP. So the question is, how do you utilize the camera’s ability to shoot VFR without switching to the PN mode? The only thought I had about this was maybe this feature is only for when you’re recording to the FireStore because I’ve heard the firestore doesn’t support the PN mode. Anyway, this is just what I’ve picked up on the net but as I’m sure you know there’s a wealth of bad and good information out there. Now all I have to do is extrapolate the truth so I can give my editors the right answers. So, thank you again in advance, if you could shed some more light on this issue that would be great.

Jan,
Please excuse me, I’m still learning these systems. I actually should have kept reading the manual and would have found that it talks about shooting VFR in 720/24p. So, my apologies I just didn’t read it carefully enough in my haste to test it, I only had about 15 minutes with the camera, so I had to be fast. Anywho, it talks about doing a frame extraction so I’m guessing that’s all I have to do to view the footage supposedly shot at 60fps in slow motion. Is there a good or bad way to do this extraction? Do I need specific software or will FCP 5.1.4 handle it through Cinema Tools or Media Manager? How would you recommend going about it?
Thanks again for all your help and patience I really appreciate it.
