  • HVX 720/30p slow motion frame extraction

I’ll try to make this question as clear and concise as possible about a shot I’m trying to get to slow motion.

Specs: Shot in 720/30p mode to the P2 card. According to the DP, on one particular shot, they adjusted the frame rate to 60fps to achieve slow motion. I believe the mode was still set to 720/30p despite them adjusting the frame rate to 60 because the on-board audio (4trks) came with the video, so I’m pretty confident they did not shoot VFR in the PN mode.

With this in mind, my question is: Is it possible to reveal the slow motion in FCP, as it would appear if shot in PN mode, without having to do a speed change in post?

The footage ingests as 29.97 which makes sense but the shot in question still plays back at regular speed. Is there some sort of frame extraction I have to do to expose the slow motion? And if so, how do I go about doing this? I’ve tried discussing this issue with a few post houses and no one so far seems to know what to do with the footage to extract the slow motion, other than adding a speed change in FCP.

If anyone knows how to handle this I would really appreciate some advice and I apologize if this question has been asked before, I did do a search but I couldn’t find anything specific to this issue.

Thanks in advance for the help.
    James.

The only way I know of to get smooth slow motion is to have shot 720p60 at 59.94, then using the Frame Rate Converter or Cinema Tools to conform the footage….taking 60 frames…FULL frames, and making them into 30 full frames. If your footage is 30fps, as it appears to be according to you, then neither one of these methods will work, and you’ll have to do the traditional FCP slow motion, where it doubles frames.

Shane, thanks you so much for getting back so quickly. I apologize for my slow response. What you’ve said really confirms what I’ve been reading and it’s unfortunate for the director and editor that the DP on this project didn’t look more into the camera and how it handles things. I have one more question for you though. The camera manual talks about the HVX being able to do VFR not only in the PN modes but also in 24p, 30p and 60p within 720 of course. When I tried this, at 30p and adjusted my frame rate to 60fps for slow mo effect, with the P2 card it seemed to ignore the frame rate change and therefore the footage was recorded simply as 30p, or 29.97 in FCP. So the question is, how do you utilize the camera’s ability to shoot VFR without switching to the PN mode? The only thought I had about this was maybe this feature is only for when you’re recording to the FireStore because I’ve heard the firestore doesn’t support the PN mode. Anyway, this is just what I’ve picked up on the net but as I’m sure you know there’s a wealth of bad and good information out there. Now all I have to do is extrapolate the truth so I can give my editors the right answers. So, thank you again in advance, if you could shed some more light on this issue that would be great.
    Cheers,
    James.

Raylight can fix those files so they play in proper slow motion.

Thank you Barry, I’ll give that a try. The HVX is a really great tool but it’s funny how much misinformation is out there and circulating even on set with working DP’s. Is there any source of good clear and concise information, like an instructional mov or something that would paint a clear picture of the Camera and it’s various functions? I’m sure if this is correct but I heard that you may have put together a video about the camera, is this true? If so where can I find it because it would be a great resource.
    Thanks again for your help.

Yes, I’ve got a 270-page book and about six hours’ worth of training DVDs available. You can get the DVDs at http://www.hvxtraining.com and the book or DVDs at better resellers or even Amazon. The main book purchase site is https://dvxuser.com/articles/hvxbook/

    Thanks for asking!
