  • Thanks very much for your time Brian, I’m currently investigating a method using XPresso, I’ll post here if I get anywhere.

  • Sure, I believe I’ve posted it here: https://f1.creativecow.net/13165/13165

I must add, eventually each “pixel” square will be halved, to mimic the mechanics of a real flip-clock, but right now I’m just using full squares as a proof of concept.

    Anybody have any ideas?
Is there any way to export vector points to After Effects?

Much appreciation for anyone who can help.

    Weird, just found a workaround:

I create a 2D layer, and draw any mask on it… This will then ‘wake up’ the viewing window and allow it to see 3D cams, motion paths, layer handles etc.

I can then delete the 2D layer and everything is back to normal.

For the record, I’ve added a very subtle “Add grain” adjustment layer, and the visual problem seems to have disappeared.
It means of course that I now need to have slight grain in my video, but it’s a welcome tradeoff.

Thanks for the quick reply, I’m keyframing the opacity of a black solid, which is on top of all my other layers.

I’ve done this type of “fade up” many, many times before and it has always looked OK. I think it’s the unusually long length of the fade that’s screwing me up this time around.

I’ve tried to eliminate all possible problems – I just put a red solid under the black layer (so that the comp should just be a simple slow fade from black to red) and the stepping is still happening. This means that the problem isn’t caused by my footage or whatever underneath.

There are no effects applied to my black layer, and this problem isn’t local to this specific project/machine.

It looks as though there are only a specific number of shades of black to fade through, and my frame count is larger than this particular number. Does that make sense?

I’ll try to up my bits-per-channel and see if I have any luck.

    Thanks for your help Thie,
There are literally hundreds of lines, as it is quite a detailed image, and option 2 doesn’t seem to work either. I think I’ll give the file to a friend with freehand to see if they can combine it.
I thought it would be as simple as Object: Path: Flatten paths or something similar. Seems like basic functionality.
Anyway thankyou for your help, it’s greatly appreciated.

  • Dave, yep that’s exactly what I’m trying to do, so that keylight doesn’t need to be used anymore.
So if I prerender every still character, what’s the most CPU efficient format to render the individual images in?
    a PSD file? PNG?
