“Question is, why would you want a compound clip if a simple REPLACE does the trick?”

Forgive me but I wouldn’t. I was after a one step “reattach audio” solution and you suggested ⌥G.

    Post copied here:

JE “it would be logical if one has a “detach audio” command to also have an “attach audio” command.”
RK “Then there’s the ⌥G command that does exactly that.”

But yes Reveal in Event Browser and Replace works fine.

After all these years I had never, before today, explored the notion of having two timelines open at the same time and using one as a source. Never seen that way of working before. Makes me feel ridiculous – what planet have I been on? What’s even more annoying is I think I like it!

I keep asking myself why I want to do this anyway. Answer is invariably if I change my mind about something and simply want to go back but it’s too late to simply “undo”. If this is the case I think I am more inclined to use the two step fix mentioned by Robin Kurz earlier rather than making Compound Clips but it’s possible that yours and my Compound Clip paranoia is a result of bugs now long since fixed.

Incidentally I much prefer the compound clip solution to “nesting” in Legacy.

Thanks for that Ronny. I get it.

I wonder why they did not generate the proxy files in FCPX first for Allan anyway. I guess they did not have the software.

One day it won’t matter how ill disciplined one is, the software will just get you out of trouble no matter how deep the mire.

Not necessarily a good thing though methinks.

    Cheers

Out of interest with different file names would there not be enough shared metadata for FCP to still figure it out?

Did they import everything into an FCPX Library as managed or external media prior to sending you the proxy files?

Did the Proxy files come to you in an event in a Library?

I do the same as you with cameras and keyword collections.

My first workflow was to have a keyword collection for each take with both camera angles in it and sync one take at a time and then join them all up in one timeline.

But I have had surprising (no astonishing) success simply selecting all the takes from Cams 1 and 2 from a whole morning’s shoot and simply hitting hitting ‘Create Multicam Clip’ – just so long as I have made a point of making sure every take has a camera angle assigned (‘Wide’ and ‘Mid’ or ‘Cam1’ ‘Cam 2’) in the browser. Give it a go. You may be surprised (obviously with ‘use audio for synchronisation’ selected).

It just seems to work that simply for me. Massive time saver compared to my first workflow and where both cameras were not on at the same time you simply see gaps on the other camera angle when you open it in the angle editor.

If that fails I have found adding approximate markers to each take helps but that is a lot more laborious as it involves going through them all.

I have not found a need for making compound clips and not sure if there would be any advantage to doing it that way.

    Cheers

Thanks… not as a plug but in case anybody is interested Preditors in London W1 are making inroads with FCPX and I have spoken with Clear Cut Pictures who are testing the water.

    Anything new from these people?

As an aside I have already asked them about facilities houses running FCPX systems (they must be supplying to somebody) and they were unable to supply me with anywhere I could go for “finishing” a project (sorry not a ‘project’ – what am I meant to call a project … I’m not sure any more?) in the UK.
