So what you are essentially saying is that you are much “smarter” than me/FCPX users because I/we don’t realise what “poorly designed” software FCPX is even though I/we use it most days.

It’s the thing I miss the most when creating new versions. Being able to pancake and see the differences.

Interesting question. I’m not sure how you can even tell what the default audio fade is when you apply a simple cross dissolve (picture and sound). I am guessing that because the default shape is +3db when you use the handles it must also be when you apply a transition like a dissolve
I think the difference between the four is subtle indeed and most of the time I find the default +3db audio fade works okay for me.
Larry Jordan seems to think so to in this tutorial from way back.

As it’s such a short clip I would be happy to manually colour in 20 or 30 frames with the dropper to keep the passing arm black and white rather than download and learn new software (which I know I must learn moving forwards).
So if some clever person knew a way of doing it within FCPX that would be most welcome.
I am an editor and not a compositor or colourist (I know some of you clever people wear all these hats) so I’m a bit muddled about effects and layering in a particular order them and whether I could apply an additional colour mask in some way to get round my problem.

Thanks that’s exactly what I have done. there is a link also. But what when an arm passes through that mask is my problem.

Of course I factor it in. I just save my clients and myself the tedium of going through all the items and bits they get when they ask me to work for them. They get me and my stuff for a rate. My experience is that my clients eyes glaze over if I start breaking it all down. I find (and this is only my personal experience) that it looks like I’m trying to “justify” my costs. So I don’t bother. Unless they ask.
