True, but only because three years and as many paid software versions later …there STILL is no simple stroke effect in Adobe Premiere.

    UPDATE:
Said fan replacement ran nicely for about two months, then began making a hideous noise and stopped working altogether. Paolo, you were right to lay down caution. Or perhaps one pays for what they get.

  • Update!

The Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.3 update fixes all preview file and rendering inconsistencies — no more unusual dissolves. Everything looks great now with GPU Acceleration on.

I’ve been running CS 5.0.3 along with Blackmagic’s latest 7.9.4 driver for awhile now, and so far-so good. I hope these updates help the original poster of this thread as well. Happy editing, all!

  • Update!

The Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 5.0.3 update fixes all preview file and rendering inconsistencies I mentioned. It also fixes transitions and title ovelay alpha channel problems when GPU acceleration is on. Thanks, Adobe.

  • More information:

I troubleshot a bit with non-Blackmagic timelines to test if this was an Adobe or Blackmagic issue. I started a new sequence with the following settings to take Blackmagic out of the loop…

    Editing Mode: Desktop
    Preview File Format: Microsoft AVI
    Codec: Uncompressed UYVY 422 8bit
Renderer: Mercury Playback Engine Software Only
With these settings, a timeline with a red-render-bar (no preview files built) played smooth, but looked aliased and generally degraded–until preview files were built. The built ‘green-render-bar’ sections look sharp and clean.

    Then, with these settings…
    Editing Mode: Blackmagic Uncompressed
    Preview File Format: Blackmagic AVI
Codec: Uncompressed Uncompressed 8-bit YUV (or 10-bit)
Renderer: Mercury Playback Engine Software Only
The same results except that built preview files (green bar) looked just as bad as the unrendered (red bar) sections!

So it would seem that the Blackmagic timeline presets are simply not building uncompressed preview files unless the Adobe Renderer is set to “GPU Acceleration” (even with the preview file codec set to uncompressed 8bit or 10 bit YUV). Any ideas? Perhaps a bug?

  • I upgraded to the Blackmagic 7.7.2 driver yesterday and have not since experienced problem #4–crash while building preview files.

The upgrade did not solve problem #1–unusual dissolves. However, this seems only to happen when GPU acceleration is turned on. Switch Premiere to “Mercury Playback Engine Software Only” and dissolves are handled normally.

  • Thanks for your prompt response, Joshua. I have already emailed this info and have been contacted by a support engineer.

The engineer’s first solution was to use BMD’s Media Express to capture. That’s a fine short-term workaround, but I’d like to stay inside Adobe Premiere to do all my logging/capturing.

I’m just happy to hear someone confirm that it’s not right seeing input on an SD capture when BMD is set to upconvert… at least I know I’m not going crazy!

    Thanks!

  • I am also experiencing problems #1 and #4 as described by Claus.
Additionally–and seemingly related to problem #1–dissolves involving Premiere titles seem to brighten the alpha of the title, just for the duration of the dissolve, then alpha pops back to normal.
