I thought not, I’ll just give up on rendering anything it seems to cause me problems all the time. I heard it is even quicker to export without render. Why is this?

[Bill Davis] “n the end, what worked was exporting a version that was IDENTICAL to my timeline settings so that there were no re-sizing or transcoding processes gumming up the works. It was slow, (4 hours) but it worked. Then I was able to take THAT file and export a smaller version using Quicktime.”

Tried exporting at Full Res no joy

I’ll keep you folks posted. My friends a bit reluctant to let me update his computer to Mountain Lion as he once killed a computer updating it’s OS. Would this help or should it run on latest Lion?

Thanks for your advice. I don’t want to play from DVD as I’ll be losing a lot of quality with the compression that’s why I want to play of the Laptop. Are projectors generally progressive or interlaced. If they are progressive I’ll need to make a de-interlaced version no?

Okay so my next question is would the projector be progressive or will I have interlacing issues with that. So HDMI just transmits whatever signal you put through it progressive or interlaced?

Okay Don thanks. I can report that it does work as you said but the timeline does not increase in length. You still need to pull the end of the compound out.

So what I have done is create a keyword called “++Fine Cut Compounds” and assigned that to the 5 compounded parts of my cut. Because of the ++ at the beginning that now sits at the top of my event above all my folders containing keyword collections (my ‘bins’) so I have easy access to them. I will now just work on these instead of double clicking my timeline to open them up. All I have to do then is remember to drag the edges out (or back) before I screen it. This is managable with 5 compound clips but a bit awkward.

You were right about turning snapping on you can just drag it back and it snaps to the end

Thanks Jeremy I really appreciate your responses. I opened my project with the other events closed and re-linked all the media in my latest edit and bob’s your uncle I’m up and running with only one event and one project referencing only that event. Happy days.

‘m getting a new hard drive. Do you think it is smart to have FCPX duplicate that event fully then I’ll work of that one and mirror the drive. This is as opposed to keeping the files where they are and having the media foider full of Alias files?

Wow! Okay that was pretty easy just copied them over re-opened FCPX and it all worked. I thought one was not supposed to move things outside of X (i.e. using the finder) as it got all confused? I’m confused now.

Okay next problem (which I may or may not tackle depending on System performance)

So I want to merge the 4 events. I went through and deleted the keywords from all the footage in 3 of the events. The one event that is most important to me is Event 1 as ALL my footage has at least one keyword assigned to it. These were assigned when I translated from 7 using 7toX from my original extensive sub clips. These are most important to me as I can quickly navigate my footage. If I merge my events it doesn’t really matter because as long as I have these keywords my footage is organised. It does not matter that there may be several duplicates of my footage in the event. So I merged a couple of events no problem. Now I tried to merge the main events and I get the following message.

The operation cannot be completed.

Two or more media files use the same name. Rename the file or files and start again.

So anyway. Do you think I should try to merge these events somehow. Will the performance get better do you think? How would I do this? Any ideas comments. I’m going to leave it all for now but I’m interested in Hypothetical scenarios. Does FCPX work better with one huge event or lots of smaller ones.

In the day job (a different computer) I’m currently in the process of sorting through 18 months worth of news footage that I have shot into a great archive. Do I go down the one huge event with lots of footage keyworded or do I have several events

e.g. Keywords: economy/military/pollution/politics/etc or events: economy/military/pollution/politics/etc

What will work better?

Okay I get all this, the thing is my media is already on an external drive. It’s just that the 4 events that reference that same media 4 times are on my System drive. If I duplicate the 4 events to an external drive I will have 4 sets of that media, I only need one.

Is there a way to re-conect the clips in a project to a specific event in the same way as you can reconnect clips to different source media. Then I can move or duplicate that event to another drive and only get one lot of media. I’m happy to get rid if three of these events they serve no purpose but there are over 100 clips referencing one event 100 clips referencing another then 10 and 4 referencing the other two.

Anyway I’m going to back everything up and have a play around,

I can live with merging the events if it makes my project quicker. Would you agree that I should try to move the events out of my system drive and merge them to make one super event?

As long as I don’t move my media (it is already backed up btw) can I just get away with backing up the CurrentVersion.fcpproject and the CurrentVersion.fcpevent files. If I do this for all 4 events and any projects I want to backup then if everything goes to shit then this is all I would need to get back up an running right?

These database files all point to the place where my media is right? So if I confuse everything I can get myself back or do I need to make sure that I back up other stuff like the alais media files that point to my media

What I’d like to do is get everything off my system drive then buy another drive and use that as my backup, I’ll just mirror it at the end of each day using Suoer Duper. Simple and old school I know it is done
