you do understand that you will need to get a fibre card for EVERY computer that is on your network, and copper to fibre transceivers for EVERY computer on your network (for each fibre card).

I do understand this. I guess my main question is: Why go for a 4 port card when a 2 port is considerably cheaper? What is the advantage of having four ports as opposed to two?

What is your server – the G5 ? Are you running OS-X server ? Do you know how to configure a QLogic SanBox ?

We are slowly building this facility. I had been working at a botique type post facility over the last two years where we have a Q-Logic SANbox configured with a PC. Two suites with Avids are hooked up to a 5.6 TB X-Raid which we manage with Commandsoft’s Fibrejet. This has worked for us very well and I wanted to bring this to my current place of employment. We currently have three suites. The idea is to use one computer as a digitizing station and the other two computers would have access to the digitized material on a G-Speed FC 24 TB drive. Am I at least on the right track? What would be your main concerns with such a set-up? As always, thank you.

Ok…alas the gods have smiled upon me and i have been given a budget to set up a new fibre network with new drives. I am in the process of formatting the Apple X-Raid and looking to replace it with the G-Speed FC 24 TB 4gb/s. The plan is to get a Q-Logic fibre switch and have this connected to 2 other suites. In reference to the x-raid, will I be able to hook up a 2gb/s drive to this network of 4gb/s? Might seem like a dumb question, just weighing all my options. If not, is there a way to do this? The idea is to get as much storage as possible for editing and still be able to use the storage we have for archiving. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks.

Thanks….I’m still not getting playback. I checked my settings in FCP and still nothing. I also configured the AJA settings to 720p60. Don’t know what else to do.

I was using that because otherwise the timeline will not play out of the AJA into the monitor (via SDI)…I only get a freeze frame

  • Yes, I thought of that but I double-checked and everything was brought in as it should’ve been. Maybe it was from switching setups?

Well, I’ve been compressing HDV files straight out of FCP and I’ve found the files, which range about 2 mins, are usually in the neighborhood of 350 MB which works for our asset transfer system. I was using motion JPEG-B because somewhere someone said that compression is used for interlaced video and photoJPEG is used for progressive scan stuff. My clients were told this and know swear by it. If I do compress an HDV file out of FCP, it actually makes the file bigger (using both sorenson and compressor).

  • We have a VAC BBG-2 nine output generator.

  • Thanks Bob….So I promise to run around the block a few times this week and cut back on the meals. What’s strange is that I took the blackburst generator off the matrix and plugged it into a monitor with a videoscope. I only got black and no video hit. I’m guessing its still the blackburst. I guess I’ll have to look into a new one. AJA gen 10 is mustard you say? Thanks again. Jaime Quintana

  • Thanks for the info. I set the sync to internal. Only problem is I am outputting to a Sony BVW-75 and I am getting synch problems. Any thoughts on how to get around that?

You can either transcode or just recapture using an EDl. It really is a pain to have to transcode because it will take up double the space on your drives and more time depending on the size of your project. I have always found it easier to just recapture.

Your problem is because of bad in-points. Your in-points probably landed on duplicate frames causes a stutter, right?
