I was hoping to see the “exiting from RED freeze” bug get fixed. I find myself force quitting M100 daily. It happens on both our MacPro systems.

I’ll check the video sync. We were trying to record some VOs when the problem popped up. Then we tried different mics and recording (audio only) from some decks. We did not try recording a/v.

    Where should I send it?

The video wall is another one that I could put to use. It’d be great if we could get a bundle package of new BCC filters for RED rather than have to wait for an update to RED that includes new filters. I wouldn’t mind a RED update though.

    Preview/Image/Update Source is selected.

The RED “freeze” happens with MOV & MP4 files from VideoBlocks.com. It’s not just when in RED but also after exiting and rendering in M100. We have two M100 systems and the same thing happens on both.

M100 will import both VideoBlocks MOV & MP4 files into the BIN correctly. QuickTime plays them fine too.

If I process the VideoBlocks files through Sorenson Squeeze 8.5 then RED5 will work correctly with Squeeze’s MOVs.

The most recent one I tried was an SD animation in a M100 HD1080i project.

    VideoBlocks vbsd0873_ntsc.MOV:
    VideoBlocks vbsd0873_ntsc.MP4:
    H.264, 720 × 486, Millions, 29.97fps

I also tried using that same VB animation file in a different SD project with the same “freeze” results.

RED5 doesn’t mind exported M100 H264 files. There’s something about VideoBlocks files that RED5 doesn’t like. I have had this “freeze” experience on very rare occasions with files with receive from other place but I don’t remember offhand where we got them or what codecs they used. As I said it was a rare thing. But VideoBlocks seems more consistently problematic for us & RED5.

Thanks. I installed the 10.7.5 update and have experienced no new problems.

The amount of M100 bugs I deal with is a joke.
The biggest one is – after editing a graphic (first time only) – I must force quit then reopen to move forward.
I must force quit 15 times a day. Brutal!

    I hate this too.

One work around is to click somewhere on the empty desktop, then click on the Media100 window you want to work in. Only this window will be active, you can’t click from Media100 window-to-window while in this bug state but you can still get some work done without force-quitting all the time.

Some shortcuts and buttons don’t work properly in this bug state.

But with the desktop-click work-around to hop from Media100 window to Media100 window, I can often wrap up the current project before force-quitting.

I still end up force-quitting on a daily basis though. We have two licenses for Suite 2.1.2 and this bug affects both systems equally.

Another Media100/RED nuisance is with the still images. RED is a little flaky with the aspect ratios. Sometimes it is fine, other times it will change how it interprets things after applying, or corrects itself after applying. Another daily occurrence. Just now my Volkswagen logo was squashed instead of round. Going in/out of RED sometimes corrects the problem. Oddly enough, if I toggle 1:2:1 deflickering on/off before returning to RED, it usually fixes or prevents the problem.

What difference does it make to your workflow even if what you say is correct? Why are people so fixated on updates and upgrades?

For me, I’m looking for bug fixes more than new features, although that would be nice too. I’m tired of force-quitting M100 multiple times on a daily basis because it hangs up comes back from RED (this just happened again right now). That’s my #1 beef at the moment. #2 is the random glitches in rendering layers & exporting MOVs. Some days go better than others with #2.

Feature-wise, I see BorisFX putting out a lot of great new filters for every other system but Media100/RED.

  • Interesting comparison article. They included a link to an updated comparison which includes Boris Uprez (which looks like one of the lower scorers):

I’ve used RED’s UpRez for a few SD projects, making letterboxed SD footage full screen SD to match other full screen shots. It’s ok for minor enlargements. I’d use if SD to HD over, better than just scaling up, but I won’t expect any magic to occur.

You might want to use RED’s Smooth Tone in combination with UpRez. It can help clean things up a little.

I used Genuine Fractals with PhotoShop for still images. It’s ok but not magic either.
