Ok much better playing thru the sequence but it still takes a few seconds to start playing. If I play it from the Canvas play button it thinks a few secs then stops after playing a frame or two. If I play it from the timeline or the keyboard the whirly gig spins for up to 10 secs. What can I do to make it start more instantaneous?

Yep. Much better. Still has to think a second but much better. It plays thru and I can easily step thru the clip. This is what my converted file became.

I should’ve been clearer. This also happens with footage pulled from a CF card….yes, that has been imported with log and transfer….but in this case it is a Quicktime movie that was sent from the client.

All is well…I turned off the dropped frames warning in the settings and it plays fine in all formats. Can anyone tell me if/how this might affect my editing or output?

So I took the advice to copy the Quicktime File into the library and the codec error message went away. New problem: FCP takes forever to open. When it does it performs verrrry slowly. The clips eventually load but after trying to playback I get this error message:

One or more frames were dropped during playback.

If this occurs frequently, try:

Turning off unlimited RT
Closing open sequences
Lowering the preference for real-time audio tracks
Increasing the speed of your system and/or disk and or network connection

RT Extreme has determined these dropped frmaes were caused by slow disks. Please try:
Increasing the speed of your disks
Decreasing the number of RT layers
Limiting your RT bandwidth in user preferences

The project is on my external drive. Not sure what to do. I tried to change the settings as suggested and unplug some usbs but I can’t run my keyboard or mouse or second monitor without the usbs. Help?

It works. Will also try copying the qt library over to my system. The camera is a Sony Z1U.

It is HDV. Also, the green screen clips that do play also have that codec listed in the properties, so it appears that is not the missing codec. I tried to play a clip in QT (I hae the latest 10.0 BTW) and I get this error: The document “10_0001_2010-10-21_104431.mov” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. I seem to have no problem creating a new sequence in this project or opening any others…NTSC or HD. My system recognizes the two. It just isn’t converting this format. FYI all the footage was imported from an HD card. I have tried to reimport from the log and transfer window with the same result.

Hi.Yes I know that HD is not a codec. I looked at the properties of the clips and sequences that aren’t playing. The sequences say Apple ProRes422.Frame size is 1920 x 1080. The clips don’t say what codec but are 1440 x 1080. Not sure if that sheds any light. I’ve seen info out there that CMYK graphics can cause this but I don’t have any graphics in the seq yet. I’ve looked at the codecs in the QT library folder but I don’t see the codec for the seqs and I’m not sure how to reinstall it. I have already attempted a clean reinstall using FCS uninstaller and my discs. All other projects in NTSC work and I am able to create new projects in HD. I just can’t get this one to work. Other green screen clips are playing fine. I am planning to borrow my “boss’s” laptop to compare his setting with mine.

I am a former pro Avid editor but I don’t know my way around FCP as well as I did Avid. Please be patient with me! Thanks for the help!!

Thanks for your post, Thomas. Turns out you are right. There is an 800 port but it’s on the tower not the monitor. My cinema display only has 400. My 800 port was occupied, so I missed it. Thanks for bringing to my attention….looks like I’m the stupid one!
