Yes, David, and you’re definitely on to something. I came back to the project today with a clearer head. On closer inspection, it seems that none of the clips are actually missing. They just dump out early (usually after only one frame, which makes them appear all but invisible when zoomed out – but some run for a second or two before ending early). Furthermore, the master clips in the bin created by Media Manager all have the appropriate runtimes. As a result, I’ve been able to just extend the shortened clips on the timeline to their appropriate lengths (adjacent clips all start at the right in-point, both for the clip and the timeline).

But, to your question, all of the affected clips were either slowed down or sped up, using FCP’s Speed command (Apple-J). However, there were other speed-altered clips in the timeline that were not affected. Also, there are several stills in the project, which were unaffected.

So this is a known problem, maybe?

    Thanks again for your assistance.

Thanks, David. The footage originated on Beta SP and was captured using the Kona 8 Bit to DV preset for offline. I’m now trying to upres to Uncompressed 8 Bit for the final output.

In the meantime, I’ve discovered that some of the clips are not actually missing, but are represented by perhaps only one frame of the original clip, the rest simply being a black hole. Often, it seems, a clip before the “missing clip” ends early, as well.

Thanks again in advance for any light you can shed.

  • Talked to AJA and they suggested it may be my RS 422 cabling, but after playing around with different cables I’m not getting much better results.

Apparently the polling patch is effective only with Panasonic decks.

And thanks, PetteriE, for your input – I will double-check those settings right now. I know the J decks have their faults, but this time it’s not limited only to the Sony. It’s also occurring independently on the TASCAM audio deck.
