  • Clips Go Missing After Running Media Manager

    Hello all,

I’ve cut together a 30-minute sequence using DV sources which I’d like to take offline, and recapture at Uncompressed for my final output to Beta SP. This has been the plan all along, so I’ve been very careful to tag clips with accurate reel names, and keep everything well-organized.

I called up Media Manager on the sequence in question, which of course has hundreds of edits across 3 tracks of video and 6 tracks of audio.

I used the following options: Create Offline (set to Kona 8 bit), Delete Unused Media… (adding 3-second handles), and Base on existing file names. This seems to be the appropriate workflow indicated by the manual (Volume IV, Part I, Chapter 5, Page 63 – jeez what an awful manual to navigate!).

The new project is created, and the appropriate clips appear offline (and the appropriate clips appear online, namely those without reel names like graphics). Strangely, however, at least a dozen or so audio and video clips are either missing from the new timeline, or are the wrong lengths, creating several “holes” in the timeline.

Referring back to my original project, I find that these missing clips come from different sources (I have about 50), and from sources for which other clips were successfully transferred to the new timeline. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason for the missing or incorrectly-transferred clips.

Sorry to be long-winded, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible, and indicate that I’ve tried to do some troubleshooting on my own. I also tried using Media Manager’s Copy function, with the other options remaining the same, and the resulting project had the exact same problems.

Any thoughts? Anyone experienced this before? I know MM is prone to problems, but I’m hoping someone has seen this and can offer a solution or workaround.

I am using FCP 6.0.1 on a Mac Pro, with an AJA Kona LHe.

    Regards,
    Jacob Cross

    Jacob,

Sorry my response doesn’t answer your Media Manager question, but… Are you saying that your original was shot on DV and that now you’re recapturing DV as uncompressed via your Kona card? If so, exactly what is it you were hoping to accomplish with that extra time-consuming and, as you found out, hazardous step?

Thanks, David. The footage originated on Beta SP and was captured using the Kona 8 Bit to DV preset for offline. I’m now trying to upres to Uncompressed 8 Bit for the final output.

In the meantime, I’ve discovered that some of the clips are not actually missing, but are represented by perhaps only one frame of the original clip, the rest simply being a black hole. Often, it seems, a clip before the “missing clip” ends early, as well.

Thanks again in advance for any light you can shed.

Oh!!! Personally, I’d rather pay for additional hard drives than deal with FCP’s “maybe baby” online/offline.

Are any of these missing clips speed-adjusted? Still images?

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Yes, David, and you’re definitely on to something. I came back to the project today with a clearer head. On closer inspection, it seems that none of the clips are actually missing. They just dump out early (usually after only one frame, which makes them appear all but invisible when zoomed out – but some run for a second or two before ending early). Furthermore, the master clips in the bin created by Media Manager all have the appropriate runtimes. As a result, I’ve been able to just extend the shortened clips on the timeline to their appropriate lengths (adjacent clips all start at the right in-point, both for the clip and the timeline).

But, to your question, all of the affected clips were either slowed down or sped up, using FCP’s Speed command (Apple-J). However, there were other speed-altered clips in the timeline that were not affected. Also, there are several stills in the project, which were unaffected.

So this is a known problem, maybe?

    Thanks again for your assistance.

I’m having the exact same problem with media managed sequences that end up with holes in the timeline. Have you figured out a fix?
The clips are all speed adjusted. Does Media Manager not handle speed adjusted clips? Is there a workaround? I need to adjust the speed of my clips a great deal.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Because I was under deadline, I gave up on trying to troubleshoot the problem, and just went in and manually repaired the managed timeline. This was no small task, but was eventually successful. I found, for the most part, that clips weren’t actually missing, they were just 1-frame in duration, or so. Since I was working in a 40-minute or so long timeline, I couldn’t tell this without zooming way in. In general, I think I just had to extend all the clips back to their usual lengths.

    Good luck!

    Jacob,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately when I tried extending the clips in the timeline, they had slipped a lot from their original inpoints.
I was able to fix the problem, sort of, by including the master clips not used in the sequence when I media managed.
But that kind of defeats the purpose of media managing since I’m trying to reduce project size from about 20 gig. There’s a lot of b-roll that I captured but didn’t use.
We didn’t have this problem in FCP version 5. Hopefully Apple will fix this bug.

    Chris
