  • I’ve been bitten by the Seagates too. Avoid them like the plague. Bob is completely right that the issue will prob be in large part to do with time-out and therefore phantom errors being sent to the controller, which proceeds to degrade the raid set.

What ATTO does not publicise is that there is a CLI setting that can alter the command timeout on the R380/R680 so it will wait around much longer for the interupts for an I/O. This is pure magic as you can set it to 60 or 90 seconds for example and avoid the seagate issues while still maintaining the ability of the controller to degrade the raid set when a drive has truly died.

SONNET use the ATTO card in their FUSION products, and the command is documented (as well as a lot of other interesting info) in their manual which can be downloaded here: https://www.sonnettech.com/support/downloads/manuals/config_tool_utilities_ug.pdf

Search within that document for raidcommandtimeout and you’ll know what you need to do.

I also find that manual is a far better document to give clients as all the screenshots are on mac and far better laid out than the standard ATTO manuals.

Good luck, this fixed the issue for me, but AVOID THOSE SEAGATE DRIVES!

Yeah that’s what I thought, thanks for the heads up!

    Hey Bob and others,

Forgive the ridiculously tardy response, it’s been a manic few months.

In the end it was a faulty ATTO R380 card. After putting up with the Australian Distributor (who shall remain unnamed) basically laughing down the phone at me, telling me those cards are NEVER faulty and that’s why they sell turnkey systems etc. He then sent us their demo card and lo and behold all the drives popped up immediately. He wasn’t so cocky after that!

Thanks for all your help, I realise i got very unlucky on that job, but it is now a KILLER system:
    -AIC 16 bay chassis
    -16x 1TB Hitachi Enterprise drives
    -Edgecore switch
    -ATTO R380
-Top end Mac Pro server with 16GB RAM
    -Cat6 cabling throughout
    -CatDV Enterprise Server
    -All beautifully configured.

    That’s how we roll!

Thanks again to everyone for all your suggestions.
Agree with Bob that people wanting to do HDCAM over ethernet for less than 2k is beyond ludicrous, but if you’ve got a bit of cash (ie less than 20k all up) and are switched on and ready to learn (and it does take time) you CAN do this yourself. Exciting times!

    Jacob.

    Hi Eric,

    Thanks a lot for clarifying…

    8100 it is!

I really do think a ‘Best Practices’ sticky could be of great value to newcomers (and myself) with all these sorts of tips in one place…

    Hiya,

In this installation I have an SMC8024L2. As you know, SMC and Edge-Core are the same company and this switch offers all the required protocols at a very reasonable cost. I wouldn’t buy it again though as it only offers 0.4MB Packet Buffer Memory Per Port instead of 0.75MB, which the Small Tree guys say is important for video editing…

Anyhow, back to this Jumbo Frames question. Does the switch simply pass on the packets UP TO 9k, so that if both end were set to send and receive 8100, the switch would simply pass them on?

    Thanks!

We’ve never had these issues with our Gigabit SAN, if it’s well set up and everything is rendered it should play out just fine. We have 90 minute shows with hundreds of cuts.

Admittedly this is doco land so no major nesting and/or layers…

If you check the comments to his article you’ll see that it might have been an audio issue.

Thanks a mill Bob, just what I thought and thanks for confirming.

The ATTO R380 does indeed seem to be an awesome card and a step up from the Highpoints I’ve used in the past…

Thank you SO much for your help !!!

    You saved me, literally !!!!

  • Thanks for you answers.

Been using FCP for a few years now and hadn’t even noticed Boris 3D…

Probably won’t use it for subs though.

It’ll be Belle Nuit since we’ve got the option.

    Cheers.
