  • Subtitles Highest Quality – FCP Text Generator, Still TIFF file or AE Animation export?

Posted by Jacob Altman on May 8, 2007 at 8:48 am

    Hello there again,

    Title says it all.

We’re delivering a broadcast show in 7 weeks, one episode of which has extensive subtitles.
We’re using a dual core G5 with a Blackmagic card, and everything will be on a 10Bit timeline.

What’s the best for Text and Supers, purely in terms of ‘crisp and clean’ ?

    -Text generator on 10Bit Timeline
-TIFF files exported from (Belle Nuit for example) and laid on top
-AE generated Animation file with Alpha (but that would require re-rendering those clips, wouldn’t it ?)

Thanks in advance for your answers,

    David

Boris Title 3D. It’s right in FCP.

Besides the image quality, you also have to concider how you’re gonna make them. Having them timed right and decent translated / shortened is even more important (just an exact translation will result in unreadable subtitles as no one can keep up with the speed)
As a rule of thumb, if you can speak the subtitles out loud on a normal pace you’re fine. Most of the time this means shortening the text (depending on languages of course) by 30%

Now you mentioned Belle-Nuit. If you already own that, your choice is made or you’ll be facing a hell of a job re-creating all them.

Next, check out if Spherico XML converter supports belle nuit. If so, you can try my free FCP text generator to see if that looks nice to you. (It has decent outline and shadow, and keeps its reg points stable, unlike the standard FCP text generators)

It’s a part of Subbits, download from my site.

    Thanks for you answers.

Been using FCP for a few years now and hadn’t even noticed Boris 3D…

Probably won’t use it for subs though.

It’ll be Belle Nuit since we’ve got the option.

    Cheers.
