    Thank you Alex,

This is exactly what I was hoping to find. My system only has CS6 on it which doesn’t provide the Move and Transcode option, just move which explains my issues. Fortunately I have access to a system with CC on it so I’ll give it a go when it’s free.

It’s annoying because the un bridged clips in the project come across to FCP fine and link back up to the FCP log and transfer prores files just great. Unfortunately there are two 14min takes that completely throw it out of whack as it doesn’t understand the join between the two MTS files. At least on my XML.

Once again thanks for the speedy reply and I’ll see how it’s all gone in the morning.

Thanks for the pointers all. The double frames have been put down to ‘operator error’ on the part of the camera man and fortunately I think I’ll only have to try and fix up a couple of the shots.

The machine had Catalyst on it and as it’s free that was what I went with, but if EditReady gets your seal of approval then I’ll give it a look in the future Shane, and yes I should probably spend a bit more time getting to know Resolve. It’s sometimes just hard to leave what you are most familiar with, especially when you’ve got tight deadlines!!

    Thanks again folks.

Sorry I shouldn’t have said ‘conform’ in the earlier post that was the wrong terminology and confused things.

At the moment in order to mix these files together I’m thinking I need to reverse telecine the 29.97 files with repeat frames to remove them and give me an original 23.98 file and then add the pulldown back in from AE or Compressor with blended fields so that I get smoother motion when played back on a screen and combined with the genuine 29.97 footage.

Does this sound like a logical workflow or have I overcomplicated the issue?

I’ll cross the PAL bridge when I get to it.

Fair enough…… So live with the pulldown in the content with and make sure that the clients know it’s there?

They’ve complained about some of the footage being jerky before……is all

Could I remove the pulldown with repeated frames and then add interlaced field render pulldown back in for example as that would give a smoother result? As this is going out on TV screens…..

    Or am I missing something?

    Thanks Rafael,

I’m in PAL land too which is partly why this is proving such a headache all round. This footage that we have also has to be edited in with files that appear to be true 29.97 files with no pulldown added and I think, with me at least, this is what is going wrong. In the past I think that each of these clips has gone out as it’s own discreet file and the display TVs have been left to sort of removing the pulldown etc.

Going forwards any advice from anybody on what the best way to work with this material is considering there’s just me to do everything? At the moment I’m thinking conform everything to 23.98 and work with that but I’m not sure what this will do to audio sync etc.

I expect I’m going to get sent some PAL content too in the future just to further confuse things.

    My ongoing thanks all.

    Thanks Dave,

That’s as I feared I’ll have to talk to the boss man about software etc. Just to confirm though have I followed the correct steps above to achieve my unsatisfactory end result.

Do the Natress filters work well?

    Ta again

March 21, 2013 at 5:02 pm in reply to: combining 5.1 and stereo files in a single timeline

Thanks guys, it’s for TV demos so mostly the sound will be off but the client would like the option there if it’s available so need to do what we can to accomodate them. It’s one of those jobs where everything has come in in different sizes, formats, frame rates and they don’t want to do the easy option of keeping everything as an individual file on the playback box as the systems are set up to autoplay a specific file name. Hence my wondering if I could safely create one timeline the mix of audio on it…… We’ll give it a go and see what we get.

I’m hoping that the dial norm is OK as the 5.1 audio has been ripped out of existing files and not remixed by us here. If I make sure that the stereo files roughly match the L,R and the centre which has most of the dialogue I should be alright, I think?

    Thanks again

You can also try watching the splash screen as it loads to try and see whats crashing AE. If for example it states that it’s loading plugins as it crashes then you’ll have a good idea that the problem is here.

Last time I had this problem it was caused by a corrupted QT component.

    Yeah thanks for that……

However what’s throwing me is why changing the timelines field dominance has no effect on the interlacing of the footage? (no need to render or anything. Adding the reverse fields filter requires a render but no difference at the end). Is this be because it has been shot progressively and someone has failed to mention this? Or is something else going on here?

Why when the footage is played out in the Animation codec are the fields now swapped?

Cheers for the help so far

Cheers for that…. I kinda knew that it would be something small like that. Haven’t had to play stuff out to tape much in this job so most of my ‘in deapth’ training has ebbed away…. probably time for a refresher.
