Hi there I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what may be causing a slight problem I am currently having when trying to export a 1.5hr programme from FCP 5.1 to a Sony DVW-A500P deck via a AJA IO, Rs-422 deck control, and the SDI imput. I lay a bit of timecode onto the tape from within FCP, and then have the show record out with the DVW running off it’s internal timecode generator and regening the timecode as it goes, so the show starts at 10:00:00:00.

While the show is playing out all everything seems to be fine. The LTC and VITC check lights show green, the servo shows green and the channel condition shows green. Both the deck and my PPM’s show audio outputting FCP and arriving at the deck. However upon playback there is no audio on the Digibeta. The picture is fine but the channel condition light now shows red.

Anyone have any ideas what might be is causing this? A bad batch of stock, faultly heads etc. All the DVW’s I’ve used in the past have been pretty bomb proof to be honest. Or if there is a work around for it locking the deck to FCP’s timecode for example.

It’s a bit of a long winded question I know but it’s happened a couple of times on a couple of different decks, all rental, on a couple of different Macs so I’m wondering if it’s a settings thing or something in the way I’m setting up the export…. or should we just be looking to get our decks from a different company.

This always gets me. Pull the control panel out of your deck and check to see if the “OUT REF” switch is on “Ref”. If it’s on “Ref”, switch it to “Input Video”.

Through testing, I’ve discovered that for digitizing and normal playback, switch it to “ref”, for layback, switch it to “Input Video”. I’m sure there’s a setting that avoids all this on my Kona, but for my system I know this works.

    Good luck!

Cheers for that…. I kinda knew that it would be something small like that. Haven’t had to play stuff out to tape much in this job so most of my ‘in deapth’ training has ebbed away…. probably time for a refresher.

You’ll need to do an Insert Edit to Ch 3/4 and make sure you turn off channels 1/2 in the ETT window.
