March 16, 2007 at 6:37 pm in reply to: How can I reacquire HD clips to a higher quality without deleting originals?I was suggesting a method I have used myself successfully in the past. Maybe my way is more down-and-dirty, but it works. Nonetheless, go with Floh’s suggestion first.
In fact, I just reproduced my method: digitized a clip, renamed its source file name, then told Media 100 to re-dig the clip rather than relink. After it was done, I drag-and-dropped the original clip into my bin – I now have 2 different video clips – physically different but identical in footage/timecode.
Going one step further: I digitized a different clip. Unlinked it by renaming the source file, and let the Media 100 search for it. It couldn’t find it. This was expected. I then re-named the clip back to its ORIGINAL name. Told it to relink. It was able to find it, no problem. So by changing the name of the source file, you won’t lose abilty to relink back to it… unless you can’t remember what it was originally named!
So I do know my method works safely, but it is all about understanding in detail how the Media 100 handles its original source files. Floh’s way is safer, my way is probably what MacGyver would do 🙂

Ah! I see that setting, I had completely overlooked it.
However, I just set it to “analog” for sync.
I am still encountering the same issue – audio preceeds video 1 frame.

Aaah, yes… the beloved AE Relink issue…
There is no way around this in your case, unfortunately… I assume you’ve long since deleted the Media 100-created folders and files the REF files are trying to relink to?
It’s not AE’s fault. It’s not Media 100’s fault. It actually does make sense that if you’ve deleted the original digitized files that your REF clip is referring to, then it’s going to fail in its search and take a long time searching for each piece of that REF file.
Think of exporting your Media 100 Timeline in “reference” mode as such: rather than recreating self-contained data, it’s simply making calculations that refer back to the original clips in the places you originally digitized them to. If you eventually move those original clips or delete them, the file instinctively begins to search for them throughout your system. So, the more of your Media 100 timeline you exported by reference, the more original clips it’s going to need to search for… black frames, transitions, effects, digitized audio and video, etc…
Exporting by reference speeds up your process in the short term, but ultimately the few extra minutes to export a self-contained or even a different Codec can save you much AE headaches and time down the road.
Suggestion: try exporting a Quicktime as a Motion JPEG B. It does take longer to export from Media 100 than a by-Reference, but it saves you major time in rendering in After Effects… because the rendered video stays off the slower processors on the Media 100 Vincent/P6000 card. Your renders will feel like they took only 1/4 the time you were used to.
I know it’s not great news. But I hope it helps.

March 16, 2007 at 4:49 pm in reply to: How can I reacquire HD clips to a higher quality without deleting originals?Have you tried simply re-naming the actual media clip (on the drives you capture your media to)? First, find your digitized clip – in your bin, highlight the clip and select “Show Source Media in Finder.” Once the clip is located on your hard drive, SHUT DOWN Media 100. Then, simply re-name that source media file.
(note – make sure to locate that file’s associated audio files, as well. you may need them later to re-sync the pieces back together.)
If the Media 100 cannot find the file by name on the drive, it will search for it and ultimately fail to find it… the icon for it in Media 100 shows up as “unlinked” in your bin and timeline. You can then re-dig the clip with your new codec capture setting.
DO NOT change the old file name back, ever!
Now that you’ve captured your clip in the new codec setting, drag the original source media file from the Hard Drive back into the bin with its new name. You might have to change your codec settings back to their original setting, or the Media 100 may try to convert the old file into a new codec during the process.
Voila! Two clips, different codecs!

To be safe, tell us what software you have installed along with Media 100.
For example, I’ve had very bad luck installing Avid Xpress pro and Media 100 on the same system before…
Sometimes even installing the Avid Codecs has caused problems.
(this holds true for Media 100i, Media 100 HD Suite and even with Final Cut Pro)
I found it was codec-related when I went back and looked at my crash logs.
Removing Avid fully (uninstall, not just drag to trash) solved my issues.Jacob (a.k.a. “Jack”) ||

I’m going to bet that the previous comment about uninstalling the drivers, then re-installing the drivers, could solve this issue.
To be honest, I’ve felt my Kona 3 deck controller was buggy from the get-go.
I’ve instead purchased a Keyspan USA28X adapter for my Mac which works flawlessly for my deck control needs… it gives the Kona board one less thing to think about.

No, the Kona 3 is all-digital.
Well, wait, that’s not entirely true…
It cannot CAPTURE analog signals. Not without a digital converter… which AJA happily makes and sells… Perhaps the AJA HD10AVA is what would work best for you here?
During PLAYBACK: It has “Video Monitor Out” Component BNCs that in the control panel you can adjust to be Analog SD signal out. There are also RCAs out for audio monitoring. That’s where the Kona 3’s analog capabilities end.
Hope this helps you! Good Luck.

My issue *may* be similar and/or related, albeit a different platform:
After installing Avid Xpress Pro DV on my system (Macintosh Quad G5), none of my old After Effects projects would open without crashing After Effects either mid-load or just after loading. I also noted that Final Cut Pro would no longer load without crashing, as well.
I checked the crash logs on my system, and in both cases the programs crashed while loading Codecs.
After removing Avid Xpress Pro from my system (thank goodness for their Uninstall tool
