  • Also all AMA will be inmediatly recode, I’m familiar with the way AVID manage media. But not very clear on organization methods inside the project window

  • Absolutely agree, I will link to AMA when possible and will recode everything else but I need to mantain folder/directory structure. Footage is a 4 years documentary with over 20,000 media files and a wide range of formats, meticulously organized in 1087 folders and still one year ahead of shooting. Haven’t work in AVID in a while, mostly FCP in the past 6 years and the only way I’m aware to organize this kind of footage is trough a folder structure. I might have a wrong aproach on this but my interest right now is only folders, no clips.
I already made a copy of the folder structure without the files and it would be great if I can somehow transfer that folder structure in to AVID. My idea is to create a bin inside each folder and then AMA/recode everything in the proper manner.
I’m not versed in the AVID ways, and my fear is to overload the project, any suggestion will be moist than well received.

  • [Craig Seeman] “It seems you’re not sure how to use FCPX’s methods of organizing.”

You are so right, i don’t know anything about FCPX’s methods, and i couldn’t care less. I remember when i started in editing i had a huge notebook about AVID’s methods and it was absurdly time consuming trying to keep up with the software’s logic. What kept me working on FCP 7 was that the relation between me and the software’s method where invisible, it gave me so much room for creation and a really appreciate that simplicity. I only have time for finished ideas, anything else is
    the way.

  • FCP X is a great tool if you are doing simple stuff but if your project is a feature film just forget about it. The simple fact that doesn’t support multiple bins and sequences at once makes it inadequate for that kind of challenge. FCP X is great at things that i don’t really need as an editor, usually color correction and fancy titles are not the things that i worry about when editing and basically is done by other people using more powerful tools like Flame and such. But hey ! it’s new and people love shiny stuff, so they are going to love it anyway..

Yes, i already check that, the thing is that is in 3D, and i can’t use it that way. It must be 2D. If i knew how to change the expression it would be a great example, but i am too ignorant yet. Still need it in 2D.

  • I’m worried that the question is not clear. Is there any way to have more control over the tip of the extremities by an expression? The postition of the feets and hads seems to be subordinate at the movement of the leg, it looks like the point of lean is the tip of the leg and not the feet. Could be possible that the feet is positioned in a very stable point and the leg bend itself by the movement of the torso ? That could be great !!. Anyway i am very grateful for your expression and it really does the work, without it i would be in the wild. Is just that i have to animate this character a lot and in a very complex way, so i will like to have the most of control before i start animating. Can this be done by expressions ?

  • I have the extremities all parent to the torso so when the character jump i move it by the torso and animate the efectors so the tip of the toe lands first. But i found very hard to do the whole movement coherent, the bending of the ankle and the tip staying in place it has to be done almost frame by frame because the movement of the rest of the leg changes the position continuously. The character changes the lean point by the two legs and the hands, so i have the same problem with each extremity. It seems absurd to me that After Effects being on of the most complete 2d software doesn’t have an plug-in or asistant to simulate a bone system to animate properly. Thanks for your time again !!

EXELLENT, very nice, very smooth, lot of control and a very ease to follow tutorial even for a beast like me. I olso have a question by the way, let’s asume that my character is dancing, when his feet touch the ground how can i make them stay in the surface instead of going through it. The movement is nice, but i am having a lot of trouble with this, can it be fixed by an expression ?. Anyway, i am very thankful for the knowledge you are sharing and the way you are doing it, it’s a great work.

Oh, i check Dan Ebberts’ expression on inverse kinematics and is a candy !. Frankly i still see a bunch of numbers and ecuations that i can understand, but thanks to Dan’s way to simplify the expression i am on my way to animate this guy. I am very thankful. I still believe that a plug-in could be exelent because are many factors on the movement that have to be done in a very tricky way, but still is a powerful tool. Thanks for your time.

  • Thanks a lot my friend !! i just read your reply and i am going to force myself to understand it. I am in a very primitive stage right now and it seems advanced. But MANY MANY THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. I hope your snap was reparing.
