FCP 5 is very old an only has the XDCAM SD codecs and the 25 Mbps HDV codec. This is the same codec used for EX @ SP 1440; if you happened to shoot in that codec you can rewrap to QT and he can edit. The 35 Mb HQ 1920 codecs were not added until v6. You’d need to convert everything to a format he can use, perhaps DVCProHD or Apple Intermediate. I don’t think 5 even has all the ProRes codecs.
Another long shot possibility is perhaps using a recent version of iMovie with the Calibrated Software EX Essentials bundle. But it would have to be iMovie 9 or higher, I believe.

You don’t use traditional File–>Import, you use the Media Browser in the bottom left of the application. There’s a dropdown menu there that can be set to ‘File Directory” (in which case you’d have to go to BPAV–>CLPR–>ClipNameFolder–>ClipName.mp4) or a specific format– in this case ‘XDCAM EX.’ If you set it to ‘XDCAM EX’, Premiere knows how to read the EX card structure and will show all the thumbnails at once. Let me know if you see otherwise.. Should definitely work in CS5/5.5.

Change the drop down menu in the media browser from “File directory ” to “XDCAM EX” and you’ll see thumbnails for all the files at once.

If it’s as you describe it could be something in the Mac hardware (GPU etc) or it could be a conflicting QuickTime component (Zygo, Perian etc). If you’ve installed any special codecs try removing them one at a time from your QuickTime library. I seem to recall an issue like this when the demo version of the Calibrated plugin was installed with an older version of Transfer.
Also, if you download the Cinemon.mp4 trial (which allows you to open the .mp4 files directly in QT and import into FCP without re-wrapping) do the artifacts/lines persist?

If you are using Log and Transfer in FCP7 with the Sony L+T add-on installed, a spanned file that doesn’t cross cards should import as one logical clip. Are you getting a mix of combined clips and sub clips? This should not happen. I would check the same assets in XDCAM Transfer even if only as a test.
The manner in which the card is formatted should not make a difference, nor should any other setting or operation on the camcorder, unless you have stumbled across a bug or some strange problem with FCP. The file spanning protocol is not something that can be changed by the user.
As always, if you are able to confirm that there is some strange data issue occurring, make sure everything is up to date and try an All Reset followed by a format of the media on the camcorder.

File spanning on one card occurs when you reach the file size limit of the Fat32 filesystem, which is 4 GB.
If you are rewrapping for FCP using XDCAM Transfer or XDCAM Browser, a spanned clip made up of multiple files will be imported as one clip by default; Transfer also gives you the option of selecting only the individual sub clips (e.g. part 1, part etc) in the LOGGING–>Sub Clips area should you not need to import the entire master clip.
If you are using one of the Browser apps to transcode or rewrap to MXF, the exported file will also consolidate the file portions into one continuous file.
You cannot use the Browser applications to combine multiple .mp4s into an .mp4 over 4 GB. But you should not need to and the clip spanning functionality should not interfere with any of your workflow. Most applications will treat the spanned files as one logical clip.

The drivers are not required unless you are using a built-in express card slot. Have you looked in System Profiler or Disk Utility to see if the camera is seen at all? You may also want to check on another machine. Call the tech group @ 800 883 6817 or bis dot product dot support @ am dot sony dot com, they should be able to resolve as long as nothing is broken.

You don’t need any of the components shown next to the red “!”. These are strictly for XDCAM optical disc. You should un-check the ‘Check when Application Starts’ box so you don’t have to keep dismissing the window.
As far as the video issue it’s had to say without asking a hundred more questions about your specific setup. It could be the video card’s hardware acceleration or it could be other QuickTime components causing a conflict. Keep in mind that all the XDCAM software does is connect to devices and re-wrap files. The decoding of the actual AV content is done by Apple codecs based on the Sony spec. It’s possible for the metadata in the re-wrapped .mov to get ‘broken’ or corrupted in such a way as to affect the video performance but very unlikely.
