The clips should not be locked automatically. Can you select UNLOCK from the clips’ metadata (under the viewer)?

correct all around.. PDW700/800 are optical disc based and strictly UDF. if you have to provide an NTFS drive that’s just the way it is and you should think of it as an operating expense or bill them for it.

You don’t want to use a FAT formatted drive for UDF files. You will hit the 4 GB limit quickly on 422 50Mb clips with 8 channels of 24 bit audio.
This has nothing to do with XDCAM; it’s just how file systems work.
Browser will never join spanned EX clips when copying or exporting. The only exception is when you use it to rewrap for FCP, in which case it will output a concatenated clip of whatever size in an mov wrapper. Browser will also reject an EX .mp4 (for example, exported from FCP) over 4 GB if you try and import it manually to any location.
UDF refers to a file system (used on optical discs). it does not have a file size limit and will take virtually any file you can fit on the media. Likewise Browser will not restrict import/export of UDF files based on size. Again, the size restriction is a function of Fat32 formatting, which was chosen largely because of it’s cross-platform read/write capability..

Neither the EX1 nor Clip Browser are capable of creating files larger than 4 GB so you should be fine. Long records on the cards are chopped into ‘spanned’ files that are less than 4 GB each and CB will not concatenate them. It will only copy them. Where you will run into trouble is if you or the editor try and use the same drive with FCP and XDCAM Transfer (or XDCAM Browser or Log and Transfer). When Transfer imports a spanned clip made up of multiple <4GB files it creates a single .mov and once that file reaches around 4 GB the import will fail with an “insufficient disk space” error.

You can’t upgrade from that version. You actually need to be at 1.13 or higher to upgrade yourself. It’s technically possible from 1.11 but officially discouraged because of how the updates work and what gets installed with each one. You should call and arrange to have it sent in and upgraded when time permits. The EX1/3 firmware has been taken down from the US web sites and can only be legitimately obtained (i.e. from the U.S. Sony Sales company, not from Sony UK, Canada etc) by calling the tech support office and telling them that you are at 1.13 or higher (EX1) or 1.05 or higher.

it’s still on the download site (https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads) but it’s been moved to the ‘Legacy Applications’ area.. Go to the ‘Applications, Plugins and Drivers’ tab and scroll down to the bottom of the page.

If you send him a thumb drive with Proxies copied from the disc they can use XDCAM Browser or PDZ-1 (both free Sony apps at https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads)to read the proxies. Copy the proxies using the camcorder (assuming it supports this, has to be 700/F800); this will create a virtual disc image that Browser or PDZ1 can open. Unfortunately neither of these apps can open standalone proxy files stored on something other than an XD disc image.

What are you viewing on, i.e. what software? Latest version of Browser or Transfer? Do you see anything for these clips (thumbnails, errors)?
Just a stab in the dark since I don’t know much about the issue but have you tried manually importing the clips using Browser to rebuild the BPAV and metadata?

Cards have to be updated by Sony but this should not be req’d. PMW-500, 350/320, EX1R and F3 Cameras are updated by downloading firmware and loading into camera from SxS.

go to https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads. this is the best download resource for all things XDCAM. Clip Browser is being discontinued; it’s strongly recommended that you use XDCAM Browser (v 2.1), which is the replacement for CB. in terms of workflow, look, feel etc they are very much alike..
