If they have to come in for any reason they will need to go to NJ or CA.
These can all be user-updated and should not need to come in unless there is a problem. Firmware and instructions are below.

This should be looked at by your local Sony Service tech. Where are you located?

Negative. In Avid Media Composer/NewsCutter there are ways to keep all 8 tracks from hitting the timeline but I do not know of a similar trick in Premiere..

July 2, 2014 at 4:49 pm in reply to: Missing .SMI file — can I still convert .mp4 file to editable format?you have to highlight a folder in the Explorer window and then select import. the imported files will go to the folder you have selected. are you getting a “can’t import” error? this generally means the file is damaged. if the above doesn’t work we may be able to help but please verify that you cannot import first. you can reach me at ian dot cook at am dot sony dot com.

July 2, 2014 at 4:26 pm in reply to: Missing .SMI file — can I still convert .mp4 file to editable format?the lack of the .smi isn’t a big problem but the presence of SLV files (stands for ‘salvage’) indicates a media or camera problem and an incomplete clip. try manually importing this .mp4 to a new archive using Content Browser.

This is normal with 2.10 and Snow Leopard. Update to 2.13 and the thumbnails will process correctly. https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads . Go to Applications–>Legacy Applications–>XDCAM Transfer for FCP.

The files are huge because they are are getting converted from a 20 Mbps codec to a 200 Mbps codec. They will grow by a factor of 10. You can recompress to XDCAM 50 or a slightly more lightweight codec using the media manager or Compressor..
FCP X gives you the option of a re-wrap only, without the transcode to ProRes. Using this option the files remain at their original data rate and file size.
Another option for 7 would be to use the ClipWrap application to rewrap the .mts files for FCP 7.

June 19, 2014 at 6:38 pm in reply to: No Timecode on SD Card – at Zeroes – FS700 & Final Cut Proi understand the issue and think it is because you are not at 7.0.3. L+T does not parse AVCHD TC correctly without this update. i believe 7.0.3 was part of a Pro Applications Support update (which would automatically be in the ‘Software Update’ queue). see if whoever owns the Mac will let you update. versions below 7.0.3 also have other issues including ridiculously long transfer times (8-10x real time) if the files were recorded with LPCM audio instead of Dolby. see below image of a functioning L+T window talking to my FS700:

June 19, 2014 at 5:01 pm in reply to: No Timecode on SD Card – at Zeroes – FS700 & Final Cut Protry ClipWrap. it rewraps to .mov without a transcode and allows for direct import. i believe it can parse NXCAM time code.
