Yup, that should work, but since the in the iPod ad’s people isn’t completely black you could desaturate your image, then play with the levels to make it most black, and then set te layer to multiply so your highlights and midtones get the color from the background.

About the audio, check your preferences under preview. Check that you don’t have te audio muted on your Time Controls. this is kinda rare but after effects sometimes doesn’t like mp3 files. try using .wav or other format instead.

And about your preview when you click the timeline.

there’s a button at the bottom of your composition called “Fast Previews”, click it and check the last setting called “During interactions only”.

Maybe you’re talking about the aliasing effect on the edges.

You don’t tell us if you have a previsualization problem or if it also shows in the rendered movie.
I guess you’re having a visualization problem, so check your preview mode, it could be in draft mode. Set it to best or something like that (AE 6.5 is set to best by default but AE 6.0 does not)

You could use the alpha generated by our keyer to compose another layer with just the keyed part and then you can add any effect you want to it.
What I mean is something like to use your keyer to produce an invert key into ahother layer and then compose it.

I don’t own an XL1 but if your camera has a Firewire INPUT then you can use another cheap camera (my Elura80 can do it) to convert the VCR signal to DV and then input the signal to your XL1. But that`s kinda stupid since you can capture with the first camera directly. you don

You could get an Elura or Optura.
Not 3CCD but definitely great cameras.
I have an Elura80 and I’m pretty happy with it.
