November 11, 2005 at 1:36 am in reply to: Availability of HVX 200 Camera – panasonic question..

It has been confirmed several times that yes, the camera will sell (in the US) in December. There is no official launch date, just the month. We have been assured up through yesterday that this is still the case.

As for availability, it is unlikely that those who do not get on a preorder list will be able to obtain a camera in the first batch. EVS, for example, has already 80 people on their preorder list, and it is not even known yet if they will receive quantity to fulfil all of those orders. My advice if you’re intent on getting the camera right away is to call around and see who is offering it, what their price will be (most are in the $5,500 range for camera-body alone), and seeing how many people are currently on their list. The big vendors (EVS, Abel Cine, B&H, Birns & Sawyer) will probably get the biggest first shipments, so that is a good place to start looking.

November 10, 2005 at 2:48 pm in reply to: What do you think of Tosh?

    “Tosh is a fake, you’re not – that’s why HE’S counter-productive. ”

It’s just interesting to me is all. Yes, Tosh is fake. No, Jan is not. But if what “Tosh” is saying is coming from Jan, how is that any different than if it’s coming straight from Jan in the first place? Why does it even matter? I’m not defending any “need” for Tosh, but I think it’s silly that people are getting all worked up about it. Human pyschology is fun, eh?

The only thing I don’t like about defperception is that it’s rarely updated – some posts are more than a month apart from each other – and a lot of the information (granted they’re trying to “educate” the entire world) is common knowledge – or at least easy to find with just a little research on the camera/subject (which is something that everyone should be doing before plopping down six grand for a camera). The newest entry about 24p could’ve been written for the DVX years ago.

Maybe I’m just squirmy because I’ve been waiting (along with everyone else) for the camera they announced back at the beginning of the year. Either way, “Tosh” doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I just want to see some footage!

“I thought the info from ‘Tosh’ was excellent. But, I thought ‘Tosh’ was a real live person.”

Regardless of whether or not you knew ‘Tosh’ was real, the information you got still holds as excellent. You have already said it yourself. Who cares if he’s fictional or not? People get worked up over the dumbest things…

October 22, 2005 at 8:17 am in reply to: HVX-200 Demo DVD – video looks funky in spots

None of the current promotional DVD material for the HVX was shot with an HVX. The footage of George Bush was only meant to be a visual example of a place that P2 had been used, not that it was P2 footage itself. As far as I know, it came off of a television broadcast. I don’t know what camera was used to shoot the product shots of the HVX, but the artifacting you are seeing could certainly be a result of the DVD compression process and have nothing to do with the camera that shot it. Anyway, it’s irrelevant because none of it is HVX footage. The DVD has been provided to be purely informational; a new one will be released with HVX footage when a final working model has been completed (~November 8).

I’d throw in my vote for a DVD, too. I’m not as interested in going to a training session but if I can obtain something that will let me watch it whenever I want, as much as I want, and be a great reference material, I’d definitely spring for it. I don’t think it would necessarily be more advantageous to film the “camp,” per say, but just make a standalone recording where we can see up close, with good lighting everything that’s being discussed. A DVD would also be attainable by more people, more easily.

  • Yes, it records standard DV to the P2 cards as well.

That’s the one that’s going to sell for $9,999, right? 😉

More accurately, it’s not HDV, it’s DVCPROHD. Many people want to say “it’s not HDV, it’s P2!” but P2 is just the storage mechanism. You should be comparing compression algorithms to compression algorithms.

Anyway, you’re right… it shouldn’t be placed under that header.
