[Charlie Austin] ” in X, I use izotope – also amazing”

    Does RX4 come up as a plug-in within X?

[Walter Soyka] “No matter what brand you buy, you should treat it like a Seagate drive in a LaCie enclosure designed by Ford Pinto engineers with a power supply that Jaguar built in the 80s.”

[Shane Ross] ” Also, FCX Multicam is superior to Premiere.”

I started a thread about this subject a short while ago and I’d like to hear why you think this is so? Not doubting you, I was under this impression till recently myself, just would like to hear your reasoning on this.

Not being an X editor I will say the biggest plus for me working in Ppro over Legacy is audio. There is a full fledged track mixer with sends that allow for adding effects on a track basis as well as creating final mixes, for instance my specs for PBS are stereo on 1 & 2 and mono mix on 3&4. With the track mixer it’s very simple using sends and a submix.

Also the ability to send audio to Audition for repair using the spectral analysis tool is amazing. Example – during interview cell phone goes off in background – isolate just that part of the track with cuts, right click and send to audition, immediately see the phone rings in the spectral analyzer, paint them out, save and then switch back to PPro and the ringing is gone. Some sounds are harder to fix then others, but with practice you can either remove or improve anything. I use it on popped plosives all the time, it’s incredibly quick and the results are perfect.

[Walter Soyka] “Assume your primary storage will fail and have a backup strategy in place to mitigate your risk.”

While that is always the correct strategy, I linked that study because it is not personal or anecdotal. Backblaze, as you know because you tipped me off to them, buys hundreds and thousands of drives per year and is unique in that they are willing to share their experience in evaluating them. And while it’s true that “best” is a fluid sobriquet, when you see the stats on Seagate’s 3TB barracuda drives, it’s simply prudent to avoid them and helpful to mention this to others. I also think that the knowledge of the industry wide superiority of 4tb drives to 3tb drives is worth noting. Of course this won’t help you too much if you buy a Hitachi drive and it goes down on you, as they sometimes do, but then again 10 years ago I bought a Subaru that was a lemon — someone has to be in that 1%.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “Do you think that will serve Adobe better in the long run?”

I don’t know about Adobe but I like to believe that the people designing my tools have me in mind (abstractly), but in the long run your screwed either way. With discreet *edit the design guys were great and the marketing guys screwed us, with Apple it was the other way around – in both cases I was left looking for a new workflow.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] ” it just feels like we are idiots for ever choosing anything that has to do with Apple, or for being interested in more tools, or that we are underemployed, or that Apple’s take or leave it attitude is unique in some way to industry?”

Look who’s grumpy now. My remark was strictly counterpunching and not meant to be taken seriously.

[Jeremy Garchow] “The Adobe CFO is now on record saying he looks at himself in the mirror and tells himself that what is best for Adobe is best for the customer. That is crystal clear.”

Yes, from the ubiquitous “my way or the highway” school of marketing. But at least with Adobe it’s the business side, not the design team, that leads with that attitude.

  • [Andrew Kimery] “I think he was using CS6.”

If true, he might as well compare it to cutting on Legacy, *edit, or media 100. Just because Adobe has the decency to support it’s final perpetual product doesn’t make it any less DOA.

[Douglas K. Dempsey] “Seagate was my first drive failure, years ago in an iMac. Have been Seagate-averse since”

Over the last 20 years Seagate has been very up and down. There have been long stretches when I thought they were the best, and recently longer stretches where they have been very problematic. In the last few years Hitachi has had the best reputation and I found it interesting that Backblaze’s findings confirmed that notion. Also interesting is that in general the 4tb drives seem to be more stable than the 3 TB drives industry wide.
