I’ve posted a version of this on the PPro forum but I find the 2015 update very underwhelming. The 2 big items are the Lumetri Color Space and the Morph effect. Nothing wrong with the LCS but I already use Colorista and MB Looks and other than the ability to drop in some LUT presets there’s nothing I don’t already have, and much would be missing if I dropped my plug-ins. The Morph effect can be helpful in certain limited situations, but right now I’m having quicktime gamma issues with it (hopefully user error.) What else is there – workplace tab keys that are useless if you have a 2 screen setup, a 2D character animator function that I don’t see me ever even looking at, some small keyboard shortcut revisions and an export function that let’s you trim or expand the length of your sequence – which might be helpful if I were racing to make air, but since I’m not I prefer to adjust my length by adjusting the cut.

PPro has had major revisions in the last few years, so I’m OK with nothing much going on this year, but let’s face it, nothing much is going on.

June 16, 2015 at 8:19 pm in reply to: CC 2015: Smooth sailing so far

Not quite the smooth sailing others have found,or else I’m just a picky PITA but … after installing 2015 and then downloading all my sync settings from the Cloud –

    Favorites bin is gone.
    Effects presets are gone.
    Export presets are gone.
    Timeline presets are gone.

(I mean the content is gone, not the feature.)

Morph effect shows quicktime gamma shift going into and out of effect (Quicktime ProRes 422) on OSX 9.5

The new workplace settings tab is strictly for one screen setups – if you use 2 screens, it’s no help at all.

Quite frankly at the moment I see nothing in 2015 that helps me much. The Lumetri Color space is ok, but I still prefer to work with Colorista and MB Looks. Morph could be nice if I get the gamma issue straightened out. Haven’t tested some of the multicam settings to see if any of the bugs have been addressed, but they still haven’t changed the way you have to type in the entire timecode number if you just want to move someplace close on the timeline(as opposed to the FCP Legacy method of just typing the numbers that need changing.)

At the moment I am underwhelmed.

PS – I just checked and the bizarre multicam behavior using the “switched audio” option has not yet been changed. Maybe CC 2016?

  • Create a new sequence and make sure the “nesting” icon, which is the first icon in the top left of the timeline header, is on, then drag the plural eyes sequence into the new sequence. It should be just one layer of video as it is”nested.” Now right click on the nested clip in the timeline and about halfway down the choices you will see “multicam” – toggle to it and hit “enabled.”

This clip will now act as a multiclip in this timeline.

[Bill Davis] “. Packaging, transporting, warehousing and flooring boxes of physical product likely are up a huge part of the Studio $1200 price tag.”

I’m sorry Bill, but those costs at that volume don’t equal $800 per unit, closer to $80 per unit, if not $8 per unit, with $800 being the price difference between a unit of FCPS and FCPX.

FCPS was clearly more profitable per unit than X, but the difference is no more than a rounding error considering Apple’s overall budget.

[Andrew Kimery] ” How many today would be interested in an NLE that just cut video? No GFX. No titler. No Audio mixing. No color correction. Only the most basic export options. That would certainly remove a lot of doors but would it even be a hallway worth visiting at that point?”

    Lightworks anyone?

Interesting article. To keep the analogy going, I would say it’s important to know how frequently you will be visiting the hallway. If it’s only occasionally – then less doors are better. If your in that freakin’ hallway all day long, then I want as many doors as possible, as long as they all take me someplace I want to go.

If the hallway is for downloading clips and I only do this once in a while, I want it simple. If my job is as a bit-wrangler and I’m at it all day long, then I’ll have different priorities.

If I’m using Magic Bullet Looks in my NLE (and I do) then I’ll want something simpler than if I were a full time colorist using Resolve.

The article was written from a developers standpoint. From a user’s standpoint I long for the software that has all the doors I need and not a single one more. In that sense Adobe is closest – it let’s you add complexity by linking to other programs at your discretion.

[Tim Wilson] “but it took Jimmy Iovine at Beats (producer for Springsteen and Stevie Nicks, head of the most influential and profitable record label of his era)”

Not to get too petty, (who me?) but since when was anyone other than John Landau considered Springsteen’s producer? Not to disparage Iovine, who is a music industry giant.

  • [Ryan Holmes] ” Or how do niche companies, like an AJA, maintain profitability when they can’t sell their hardware because it costs twice as much but offers more options or better support?”

AJA i/o cards had capabilities that BM didn’t match, much the same way that KiPro offers services that the BM recorders don’t match. When we shoot multicamera in-studio we go strictly KiPro because of the control software that lets you custom name the files. The xtra value far exceeds the xtra cost, which is where smaller companies like AJA can shine.
