Everything I do is for PBS and I’ve had enough fights with them over white levels, loudness specs, hiding names on products, etc. It was a major relief when they started taking files instead of tape and as long as they want ProRes I have no interest in convincing them otherwise — too many other fires to put out.

I’ve been bi-computeral my whole life so I have no issue with editing in either environment.

We’re in the same boat, this is the main reason I’m still editing on a Mac. ProRes – can’t live without it. It’s also the reason I read your article about the Hackintosh – it is an option that I’m actively considering because at the moment there is nothing that Apple is offering that really suits my needs.

In the article you state that you are using the Hack mostly for Avid and Resolve – so why use OSX at all? It’s a lot easier to build your own PC.

Not only have i never left my phone out in the rain, I’ve never heard of someone who did. And for the privilege of fixing something that was never broken you get to spend money on wireless headphones, wireless home speakers, and hey – wireless car radios. Yeah, so buy a new Iphone and then drop another $500 + just so you can listen. And, by the way, Apple is very specific in saying that the iPhone 7 is “splash and water resistant” – NOT waterproof.

I would recommend the G-Speed Studio XL for the raid – it’s an 8 drive raid, 7 usable drives if set to raid 5 for safety, and will get you transfer speeds in excess of 1000 MBs. All things being equal more drives in a raid equals greater speed. A 2 or even 4 drive raid is not enough, especially if you ever do multicam.

You don’t mention media storage, which is one of the most crucial elements for smooth editing. An external Thunderbolt raid would be ideal – what was your plan?

Actually it’s not. I am ambi-computeris – I currently have a mix of PC and Mac and have no problems switching between them. Since I’m editing with Ppro my only reasons to go Mac with a new edit station (I’m still keeping my first Mac Station going) is file compatibility between the 2 stations and ProRes deliverables. If MacDrive will handle the first, then it’s strictly ProRes deliverables that will cause me to stay Mac if there are no nMP updates in the next few weeks.

Yes I could export uncompressed on the PC, then transfer over to the Mac and compress to Prores – but I get very nervous about deliverables and I don’t want to extend my process a single step when it comes to handing over finished files.

It’s possible I could change my mind when the time comes to plop down my money, I just wish I had better options.

[Santiago Martí] “For Prores I use the last Miraizon codec, it works flawlessly and fast as any codec, and it is implemented as any other codec.”

I went to the Miraizon website and it seems they are no longer selling their codecs.
